Should I get an OB?

My OB/GYN doc retired early last year.  My GP took on my GYN stuff and probly can do the OB part too but her office and practicing hospital is over 30 minutes from where I will be living when we move in a month or two.  I'm thinking I might want to find an OB that's closer to home who delivers at a closer hospital?  I realize this is a very personal decision and only I can make it but I'm looking for any thoughts/opinions/pros-cons that might help me decide.  Maybe stuff I haven't thought of?  Any ideas???

Re: Should I get an OB?

  • Similar situation........I used to live about 30 mins from where I live now. But that was almost 5 years ago....so I just continued to go to the same GYN.....I was comfortable with him. He knew everything about me. When we became pregnant, we spoke with him in person to see where he would deliver us.....when he told us he wanted us to travel all the way up there to deliver, We thought it was too far to travel, so I spoke with a few friends and epople I knew where we live, and I was told to go to a gyn that is much closer, we met with him for the first time 2 weeks ago, and both DH and I love him. The hospital is the best, and you can have as many people int he delivery room as you want....which in my case is my whole family(women only) LOL

  • I think you should try to find an OB, especially if its closer and they specialize in pregnancy and delivering babies.  If you find one now you will have next the 9 months to get to know them feel comfortable with them.  Maybe you can ask around for referrals from other women in your area?
  • If your gp is a family practice md, then they will have training in ob. If they are trained in internal medicine, they are not licensed to do ob. Personally I would want a dedicated ob

  • What part of Central Ohio?  I go to Women's OB-GYN at Riverside. They are wonderrful, however, they only deliver at Riverside Hospital, so I don't know if you have chosen a different hospital. Anyhow, just something to think about...

  • Thanks for the replies.  I am currently in Plain City and will be moving to Delaware (so going further north).  My current GP is in Hilliard and would deliver at Doctor's West..just too darn far!  Riverside might be do-able but I'm kinda hoping for Marysville or Delaware.  Never seen Delaware's hospital but I delivered DD in Marysville and they have a new maternity ward since then that I hear is really great.
  • Find an OB!  Though all doctors are trained in those things for instance step dad is an internist I would never ever ask him for anything regarding pregnancy.  So find one could be fine but if you had any complications you have a specific doctor for a reason.  So asks your gp for a recommendation.  And make an appointment.

  • I would definitely find a specialist in OB, just in case you have to deal with anything "wrong".  Most GPers aren't going to be as knowledgable in ALL issues of pregnancy and if you aren't comfortable with the distance to the hospital, that would be a problem too.
  • Our actual doctor office is around 40 min away and the hospital where I will be delivering is about 30-35 min away.  We chose this because it was either the "pretty", more updated hospital, or deliver on post where I will be treated like I am just one of the "normal" military wives who gets pregnant whenever her husband is around.  I don't care how anyone gets pregnant, but I don't want to be treated as if this won't be so incredible for me and my DH!

If you find an OB that you love AND is closer to you, sounds like you've hit the jackpot.  However, our logic is that we'd rather travel just a bit, 30 min is not terrible at all, and have a great experience than wing it on post. Plus, I guess there are a shortage of OBs on post (that's what I've heard) and we want to make sure we get the necessary attention with our first birth!

    Good Luck!
