I just got a call from MH that he won an all expense paid, 7 day hunting trip to Africa in August. All he would have to do is pay for the plane ticket that would be close to 1700.00. Currently, we are struggling in this economy. We have downgraded to one car and have been cutting our monthly expenses in every way possible. MH is optimistic that his industry is picking up this month (he's in high end industrial wire and cable sales) and that things *should* return to normal as he has noticed a difference at work already. However, we will see.
He is receiving a 10k bonus in May that could be used for his plane ticket. But, we are having a new baby in June and most of that money is already spoken for.
I'm not sure what to do. He said we don't have to decide right now but I want to at least be thinking about it. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for him and I would love for him to be able to go! I suppose it all depends on finances at the time. Certainly, if things don't look up, he can't go. But if things return to normal and we can work the plane ticket into our budget, you would allow for him to go right? My Mom could always help me with the kids that week as I'll have a 1-2 month old baby.
Re: Dilemma: WWYD?
I honestly wouldn't be happy about it. Even if his business does pick up and he's getting a $10k bonus. You're having another kid...I'm all about crazy trips but I would rather save, take a trip as a family, or buy stuff that's needed for the house (even if it was a luxery item) with the $1700 which you know will end up being more b/c of the extras he'll spend while he's there. Not to mention the shots and stuff he'll need before hand...
Has he been to Africa before? That's a lot time traveling for just 7 days. My IL's friends stayed a month since it took a couple days to get there. DH stayed almost 3 weeks...I can't imagine going there for that short period of time. We don't even go to CR for just 7 days b/c it takes two days of travel to get to our house. It's not worth it.
Can he sell the trip and maybe take a weekend guys trip somewhere closer?
if it was only going to be 1700 (and not tons of extra hidden expenses) then I'd be fine with him going. I'd hate the hunting thing but I'm taking that out of the equation!
