  • It really shouldn't be too complicated - just ask what the policy is, what is paid or unpaid, and what the procedures are for notifying the of timing.

I'd also find out what other women in your department have done in the past.

    • how many weeks paid (vag vs. c/s, too)
    • how many weeks allowed after that unpaid and still keep job
    • do you need to return any assets during leave (computer, etc) that you might have at home.
    • how many weeks you can take before your due date - can you use STD or does it eat into your maternity leave after baby is here?
    • what if you are to be put on bed rest early- how will that effect your leave, your pay, etc.
    • what paperwork is needed- and when

i'm actually calling HR myself today. I already know the deal for the most part with my company (2nd pg) but need to get paperwork to my doc b/c i'm being taken out of work early.

  • I don't have any suggestions, but I'm interested in the responses.  I'm the only employee at the office I work in (three partners and me), and they've never had to deal with mat. leave before.  I'm dreading this conversation.
  • I don't know what line of work you're in, but perhaps ask about working from home, if that is allowed. Also, coming back part-time, if you want, for a while.

  • how long before hand you need to apply

if you get std and fmla

how much they pay you on std

all the numbers of the insurance company in case you or your doc have to get in touch

how long your std's intro period is and how if you need to use sick/vaca days for them

how many days you can take without them prorating benefits or vacation time

if you can take vaca days during fmla to still get a paycheck

if you have insurance through your work, how they plan to take your premiums when you aren't getting paid.

  • Also, make sure you ask about the things that they are likely to be concerned about --

Who is going to cover your workload while you're out?

How are you going to transition your work to that person -- will you have a set day that you will have everything transitioned, or will you just constantly have it ready to transition once you get close to your due date?
