water birth

My DH and I are going to try soon, I know this is planning way ahead but I am really interested in water birth. Does anyone here have water birth experience? What do you think? Thank you.

Re: water birth

  • I'm still in third trimester, but I saw your post and have some links for you. Depending where you live it can be very hard to get a non-standard hospital birth so start researching now to make sure you can find a midwife or OB who is supportive of your decisions. Where I live there is ONE hospital that will do waterbirths and only one freestanding birth center within a 2 hour drive. The earlier you get started the easier it will be for you to find what you want. You have time on your side right now.

  • Ahhh . . . be glad to live in Massachusetts and gladder still to live in Cambridge! ?There are two particularly great birth centers in Eastern MA - one very close to you.

The midwives at Mt. Auburn hospital do water births and are an AMAZING practice. ?I am planning to go to them for my prenatal care and birth. ?

Another option is affiliated with Beverly hospital and is called the Northshore Birthing Center (I think). ?It is on the grounds of the hospital but unique in that it is freestanding. ?

    Good Luck!?

  • I've had two waterbirths.  The first was in a freestanding birth center in SC, the second was at home in GA.  I wouldn't give birth any other way.  I had 8 lb babies and no tearing- I definitely think the warm water helped me stretch instead of tear.

  • FYI- because MABC is associated with a hospital, ?their center and MW are bound by hospital procedures and practices. ?A friend of mine was supposed to give birth at their birth center but was slightly anemic (not even close to being dangerous- just below the acceptable line), so they told her that she would have to be transfered to the hospital. ?She was not ok with this and decided to switch to a homebirth and had her beautiful and healthy baby girl at home.

Not all MW are created equal. ? In MA Nurse MW are required to work for hospitals and are bound by hospital practice and procedures. ?From my own personal experience with hospital based MW, I feel that most of them have forgotten about the MW Model of Care. ? ?

If you live in the Boston area and want a true natural experience, I would suggest considering a homebirth. ? My MW was amazing. ?My baby was 3 weeks "late" and "big" at nearly 10 lbs and my labor was long with my water broken for more than 24 hours. ? ?If I had been at a hospital or even a hospital based birthing center- any one of these factors would have lead to an unnecessary induction and most likely a c-section.
