Fondant

Can you eat it? I know it's a stupid question but my friend said that the time she ate it, it tasted horrible. So is it edible or just for looks? Jw cause I'm thinking about doing cupcakes with it on there with icing.

Re: Fondant

  • Depends on how it's made.

Technically, it IS edible. So is lard, but I wouldn't sit down to a cereal bowl of it.

But there are candies made of fondant. Like peppermint patties for instance. They just don't usually go to the trouble of making it taste good because the texture is fairly unappealing the way it's done for cakes.

  • You can eat it, but it doesn't really have a frosting like flavor.  I don't think there is much of a flavor.  I think you can frost the cupcakes and decorate in fondant and it'll just taste like your frosting...
  • Speaking of fondant - I was looking at some premade stuff today.  Do you really need a special fondant rolling pin for it, or could I use my regular rolling pin?
  • Thanks. Decision made. No fondant.

You could knead in a flavoring. But yeah its pretty yucky by itself.
