I know a girl who was diagnosed when she was about 2. Her parents had to get up in the middle of the night a check her insulin and if necessary give her a shot. She now has an insulin pump.
My DH's cousins, who I believe are 7 & 8 have type 1. They both have pumps and are very active little boys. They both play hockey and are just like any other little boy except their parents monitor what they eat and check their blood sugar throughout the day. They actually check their own blood sugar now. They right all their #'s down and keep track. They also now how to use their pumps...making corrections..etc.
My niece was dx'd when she was 22 months old. She's 8 now and does extremely well. She got a pump a couple of years ago and that's been great. It's amazing how good she is about knowing what she can eat, when she's low, etc. Even at age 3 she was taking her own blood sugar (obviously not reading it,but she knew just how to do it). I'm sorry that you're family is dealing with this, but it's a very manageable thing (albeit very hard with a small child). Best of luck to you guys.
Re: Know any toddlers/children who are type 1 diabetics?
Oh, poor Mia!
My sister is type 1, but strangely it didn't come on until she was in her late 20s. The insulin pump has been the best thing ever for her!
My niece's best friend (8 yo) is also type 1. She leads a happy and healthy life.
Good luck to you, I can't imagine how scary it must be to worry about that.
