Anyone do PT for tortocollis?

Amelia has tortocollis and we've been trying to get her an appointment forever but our insurance has been slow to approve it.  She finally has her first appointment this afternoon and I'm just curious what to expect.  I watch them alone during the day so I'm going to have to bring Paul too... do you think this is going to be a problem?

Re: Anyone do PT for tortocollis?

  • i'm a PT and i've treated babies with torticollis.  today will be an evaluation to see how involved the tilt/sidebend is.  a lot of the treatment will be positioning the baby and teaching you how to position her at home, and maybe some soft tissue release of the muscles just at the base of her head.  and you can bring your son...it shouldn't be a problem.  if you have any questions, you can page me here.

     good luck!

  • S gets PT for torticollis and delays (which they are currently attributing to torticollis).  It is definitely doable to have the other twin there, but I usually try to drop E off at my mom's house or get someone to watch him so that I can focus and cocentrate on the new stretches and exercises, but you will be okay, because the PT will have DD and you can wrangle your DS.

The first appt they usually do an assessment to look at delays as well as the neck tilt. Our PT did the peabody, and DS did terribly on it.  But they assessed his gross motor skills by using toys and seeing if he would roll to each side, reach to each side etc.  They also stretched and moved his neck to see how severe the tilt was.

In the end we discussed approrpriate stretches and exercises and were given paperwork with them written out so that we could continue to work with him at home.

I am at work today so am just hopping on and off the internet in between patients, but let me know if you have any other specific questions.

  • We have therapy in the home, and Brady is always in the background doing his thing :)

You'll have an evaluation first and then taught exercises, stretches to do at home. Jaxon is much better, but we did have to put him thru some very tearful stretches!!?

  • We did PT for tortocollis for Jake and there were always lots of other siblings there. ?We didn't bring our other two, but only because my mom was available to watch them. ?I don't think that it will be a problem to bring Paul.

Our first appointment lasted almost 2 hours! ?Our PT spent about an hour playing with Jake, observing his movements, and taking measurements and then another hour going through exercises with us.?

    Good luck this afternoon!?

  • Charlotte had PT for torticollis from 3 months until 13 months.  In the beginning it was mostly positioning and stretching.  Charlotte was not a fan of that - although, she wasn't much of a fan of anything, as she had colic. As she got older, she still did the stretches and positioning, but we also worked a lot on her gross motor skills - mostly through play-type activities.

I had Evelyn at about 95% of Charlotte's PT sessions and it usually wasn't a problem.  When they were little she'd sleep.  When she got older, she played.  Sometimes the physical therapist would use Evelyn to help motivate Charlotte, too.

PT made such an incredible difference in Charlotte's posture and gross motor skills.  I hope it does the same for your little one.

  • Evan went to PT for torticollis.  The therapist basically did some observations and stretches to see what he needed to work on at the first appt.  At the next appt, she went over what she observed and how she wanted to treat it.  She started treatment then.  It was basically stretches and exercises that I should do at home with him then we saw her every 1-2 weeks to see how he was progressing and show me new techniques.

I had to take Avery every time and it was never an issue.  Our PT had an assistant that would sometimes take Avery and do the stuff with her too (it was motivating for Evan to see her doing it too) and sometimes I would do stuff with Avery if they were both working with Evan.  I honestly think it was better she was there.
