Trying to Get Pregnant

Anyone have only one ovary?

Due to ovarian cancer 4 years ago my right ovary and fallopian tube were removed.  I am all clear on the cancer front since then but now that we are TTC I am concerned that I am going to face problems.  My doctor did not seem too concerned and said that we'd have to "wait and see" if I had TTTC but Id like to be more proactive.  I realize that the ovaries dont necessarily switch sides for ovulation monthly or anything so theoretically I could be fine but Id like to hear if anyone else is in this situation and their experiences?

Re: Anyone have only one ovary?

  • A friend of mine had her ovary and tube removed after an ectopic pregnancy last summer.  She just found out she's pregnant again.  It's been 6 months of trying for her.

    Good luck!

  • My mom had one of her fallopian tubes removed after I was born. (sorry not recent experience...) She had to remove it because she had an ectopic pregnancy with my brother (I like to think of it that way even though I know it was too early to tell) and then got pregnant a few months later with my annoying sister.

  • Hmm, I just logged on so I am sorry for not responding earlier. I have one ovary but I have both tubes. My OB is not too concerned either. However, I am beginning clomid to "encourage" ovulation from my right ovary every cycle since it can take forever to get KU if my right ovary chooses not to ovulate every month...I don't have the ability to switch between left and right ovary each month. You understand this.

As you can see in my chart my right ovary was choosing not to ovulate this month. The temp spike is from the progesterone to induce AF and start the clomid next cycle. Hope that helps.

  • A friend of mine had one of her ovaries removed in college because of a benign tumor.  She actually got pregnant with her son her first month trying and got pregnant with twins a few years later.  I'm not sure how long she was trying the second time.  Hope that's the case for you too!
  • A friend had one of her tubes removed and while she did have some TTTC it was related to PCOS, not the fact that she only has one tube. She started a blog about it, but then got pregnant really quickly once they moved to an RE. (First cycle with RE.)

But here are some entries about TTC:

Neither her OB nor her RE were concerned she only had 1 tube. Your ovaries do "take turns," but they don't always alternate evenly. We cheered for "righty" a lot when she was TTC.

  • my friend had ovarian cancer 4 years ago - they removed a tumor the size of a baseball and unfortunatly had to take one ovary and tube with it.  she is totally cancer free - but has had trouble TTC.   they have been trying for about a year and 1/2.  her cycles have been completely regular - but i think she's just finding out now that she hasn't been ovulating.

  • A good friend of mine had a baby last year and found out after delivery that she only had one ovary. She was just born without one. It obviously did not affect her fertility as she got pregnant on accident.

Im worried that this will be my problem and that I wouldn't realize that I wasn't ovulating until a long time had passed.  I just went off BCPs and my first cycle ended yesterday with 24 days (cd1 of cycle 2 is today) and I plan to start charting tomorrow in order to determine if I am ovulating.  It is important to me to be proactive about this - I want to do anything and everything I can!

I see that you have long cycles, does this have anything to do with the fact that you didnt ovulate?

Also, how long were you trying before you began clomid?

  • I had one tube removed due to a cyst many years ago, but I haven't had any trouble since.  I charted for about 7-8 TTA because I wanted to make sure I was ovulating.  It looked to me (and my doctor) that I was ovulating every month.  I guess my one good side is doing all the work now?

Once you start charting you might find that you're ovulating regularly too.  GL!

  • I had an ovary removed in March, started TTC in June and got my BFP in October.
