I need your cough remedies for DD (3.5 years old)

For the 2nd night in a row the poor child could not sleep because her body was racked w/ a dry hacking cough. It's like every time she inhaled it irritated her throat and she just coughed and coughed.  A really dry hoarse cough.

I gave her some Delsym (per the ped's office), some honey and ran a cool mist humidifier in her room, but that didn't seem to help. I'm desperate!

Any ideas?

  • Thick layer of Vics on the feet, covered in socks

And I think MrsErickson posted recently about a trick with jello - I can't remember the exact recipe but I'm sure she'll post here

  • We use hot jello and it seems to work well for my DD.  Mix the jello with the one cup of boiling water and allow it to cool just enough to drink it.  Because you are only putting in half the amount of water it usually calls for it's thick enough to coat the throat.  It's also warm and sweet which helps it go down!

  • Okay, can you explain exactly how the Vicks with socks thing works? I'm skeptical. If I coat her feet in Vicks and cover it with socks, then put blankets on her, how is that helping her? I can see putting it on her chest because the menthol smell would penetrate her nose, but on her feet under 3 layers? I don't understand? I'm not saying I don't believe you, I just don't get how that works.
  • Don't know where you are, but if it's still cold outside, try taking her outside for a few minutes.  When DS had croup and was coughing non-stop all night, I took him outside after I had tried everything else and he coughed so hard he threw up.  We were out on thedeck for about ten minutes, and after I got him back to bed he did not cough again all night long.

I tried this trick and it did not seem to help DS, but some people swear by it.  I have put it on his chest a couple of times and it seemed to help a little, but not that much with the dry hacking cough.

  • DD likes hot tea - if she has a sore throat or cough we do the decaf minty Sleepytime tea with honey in it.  The hot drink + steam + honey generally works well.
  • I use a triaminic vapor fan for DS.

  • Consider bringing her into the pediatrician.  Kate had an awful cough and it turns out she had a sinus infection.  The pedi said that they've got a ton of kids with sinus infections right now.

Caroline had a sinus infection earlier this winter. I have a call into her ped's office right now...just waiting to hear back. I'll see if they want me to bring her in. I was talking to my OBGYN this morning about it and she mentioned the word "asthma". I was like, Indifferent

  • It has been a tough winter for kids.  I wouldn't worry about asthma unless she's been on albuterol or a similar breathing treatment at least 3 times in one season (that's my pedi's guidelines).

I have no idea why it works. I will admit I was skeptical, too and I didn't try it for a long time. I had heard from several people (whom I trust) that it worked, so I finally tried it recently. It didn't seem to help much the first night, but I did notice a difference the second night.
