Babies on the Brain

Anyone else have a useless degree?

Yeah.  Not sure what I was thinking, but I got my B.S. in Literature.

WTH did I think I was going to do with that?  Teaching was never an option for me since I lack the patience.

Wondering if it's too late to go back for a Master's in something since we're trying to get me KTFU (and I graduated in 2001, so I'm a bit out of the loop).

Re: Anyone else have a useless degree?

  • It's never too late to further your education... just do some research on the amount of time your credits are still "good" in case you decide to take a break and focus on baby. Some places hold your credits towards a degree forever, and other places have policies like... if you go five years without taking any classes any credits accrued to that point disappear...

My undergrad degree was in psych... pretty much useless without a master's degree but I knew I was headed to grad school pretty much from the get-go...

Also if you do choose to further your education, scope out the feel of the place. Some grad schools/programs are based on the "we own you and all of your time" philosophy, and other programs are based on a "we know you have a life/job/family/etc so we'll make this as flexible as we can" philosophy...

  • yes.  my BA is in Spanish Lit.
I had to go back to grad school.  I couldn't do anything with the bachelors.
  • Don't get me wrong, I'm quite happy in my current job and it's great experience.  I am the Compliance Officer at a cornea bank.  But if anything happens and I don't work here anymore, I am not sure my education will get me anywhere else.
  • I have a BA in political science, but always knew I would teach so it worked out.  Went back to school for M.Ed. and now work as a workforce grant admin. with more pay.  Obtaining a grad degree will open up lots of opportunity for you. I'm currently working on doctorate. I'm working hard to get as many classes under my belt before I get KU, so that I can slow down later if need be.

Maybe look into programs that offer a hybrid setting: some face-to-face (traditional) and some on-line?

  • My undergraduate degree in Film Studies was pretty useless. ?That is why I went back and got my masters in Library Science. ?

I ended up only used my degree professionally for 5 years before I had Lily (SAHM), but I still feel like it was a good investment for the future when I re-enter the workforce.?

  • I have a graphic design BS from a state university...which pretty much equates to jack. I sort of used it, but have since been promoted out of the creative area. But, if I lost this job...no way would I be able to get a graphics jobs. I'll repeat that - NO WAY.

  • Yes and no. My BA is in religion, which would be useless except that I'm going into ministry. However, in order to be ordained, I need a Master of Divinity, which is why I'm in grad school now.

So pretty useless if I wanted to do anything outside of my vocation.

  • I have an undergrad degree in communication sciences and disorders which is the undergrad degree for speech pathology or audiology, so without grad school, I could have pretty much worked anywhere except in my field!
  • Most of the people I work with have useless degrees: sociology, psych, drama. At our company though all you need is a Bachelor's to get a decent job. It's insurance so it's not exciting, but it pays well.

  • I do now. I have a degree in Textile Marketing and Merchandising which shortly after I graduated the majority of our textile companies either folded or moved to Mexico...so the people in this area are all competing for the same jobs and I didn't have the experience that the rest of them had. I use my degree in some of the things I do but I've never had the type of job I got the damn thing for.

  • I have a BA in Sociology with a concentration in criminology.

Unless I want to go to law school or be a cop, yeah, pretty much useless.  And right now I'm an office manager, so I know it's not helping me right now!

  • I do.  Mine is in Business Information Systems, which sounds ok but is apparently too generic for potential employees. It's just a general knowledge of different areas of business and information systems.  Completely useless in either environment!

  • Me.. BA in Anthropology. I LOVE Anthropology (especially the biological aspect of it) but right now it does me zero good.

I'm back in school for an MA in Speech Pathology, so I can be an SLP. Much more useful, way more marketable, and a bit more economically sound than my original degree.

I don't regret having the diverse background, though- I'm glad I have a BA in one subject and am getting a MA in another. Maybe I'll go for a PhD studying the evolution of language? LOL.

  • Yep! BM in Music Ed.

I almost went Vocal Performance (which would have been even worse).

I kick myself everyday for this decision.

I have a Sociology Degree - pretty useless I agree.  No idea what I would do with it if I ever leave my current job in politics.  I only got my current job because I interned here first.

  • I'll have an associates in theatre in May. Since I decided not to be a teacher it really does nothing for me. I'm thinking of becoming an ultrasound tech.

  • I have a bachelors in English. All I ever heard through school was: "What are you going to do with that--teach?" And I would say nooooo way.

And here I am. So, not useless, but not what I had intended.

I really wish I had stuck with sports management and communications. My life would likely be much more exciting.

  • I'm the same as mrsparker, I have an undergrad degree in communication disorders/hearing & speech sciences.  Completely useless.  You need either a master's in Speech Language Pathology or a doctorate in Clinical Audiology.  I chose the audiology route.  8 years of school altogether before I can do anything with my degree.

  • BA and MA in History. Wouldn't change it, but it's not the most useful

I'm finding it somewhat useless w/ an MA. Stupid Midwest economy.

  • BFA in theatre.  I actually switched to psychobiology (half psych, half bio) then switched BACK to theatre because I missed it, like a jackass.  Then by senior year I just hated it but was so burnt out and miserable I just wanted to graduate.  I wish I had stayed another year and switched back to Psychobio and gotten my degree in that.

And now I'm doing a pre-med post-baccalaureate program and I'm applying to medical school next year.
