if you were going to a MoM's consignment sale...

what kinds of things would you advise me to keep an eye out for? The only thing I've got my eye on is that double snap n go stroller but who knows if anyone will have it (or if they'll get snatched up before I get there, I'm not going for the super early bird thing at 7am!).

I know they'll have a lot of clothes but we don't know the genders yet & my focus is more on gear. I would love to find someone who has 2 cribs in good condition to sell but I don't know if anyone will even be offering up stuff like that or if it'll be mostly small stuff.

Any advice?

Re: if you were going to a MoM's consignment sale...

  • Getting there early was going to be my first piece of advice.  The lines out the door are insane at those sales!
The one that I went to didn't have a whole ton of gear which is what I was looking for at the time.  They had some strollers, some PNPs, a few toys but not much else.  Usually the MoM club members get all the "good" stuff first.  I would recommend heading straight for the gear area and seeing if there is anything you want but then still looking at the clothes.  We didn't know the gender yet when I went but I was able to find some cute neutral items.  I spent $15 on clothes and got 12 items!  Can't beat that!
  • BOPPY PILLOWS!!!!  I don't think I could have lived with out mine.  The twins slept, ate and were entertained in those things for the first three months of their lives.  They were also great for helping learn to sit.
  • Loading the player...
  • I also stay boppy pillows, bumbo's if you can find them. Maybe a swing and bouncy seat. Make sure you bring someone to help you carry the stuff too.
  • I agree, go early.  The gear in particular tends to go fast.  There were several snap and gos at my club's last sale, and a few cribs, but I think they were mostly gone by the time the club members were done shopping.

Look for things like swings, bouncy seats, jumperoos, etc, but once again those tend to go early at my club.   Also, you may want to look at playmats, those tend to be really cheap at the sales.

  • Are used boppies really a good thing to buy? Seems like they might have been puked/drooled/spit up on, but I've never seen one in person so I'm not sure how clean-able they are?
  • Boppy pillows and covers can go right in the washing machine - TRUST me - I had 3 refluxers!! Boppies, all the equipment mentioned above. Just don't buy car seats. I would call the group putting on the sale and ask if pregnant moms are allowed to pre-shop. Our moms group and another one near us allow pregnant moms to go in with a helper 15 minutes before everyone else. This allows those who need the infant gear a jump on everyone else. It can't hurt to ask!!
  • I just went to one, so this is what I recommend you look for: (oh, and definitely go early - sorry - I hate getting up early but it's worth it)

    - twin nursing pillow

    - bouncy chairs/swings/bumbos

    - baby tub (I got a nice one for $2)

    - exercauser (they are plastic - easy to clean)

    - diaper champ (once again, plastic!)

    - monitors if you can find them

    - baby gates for stairs

    - contoured changing pad (I got one that was never opened out of the plastic, and you are going to put a cover on it anyway.)

I also bought an extra set of Car Seat Bases for DH's car, waterproof mattress pads, and crib sheet.  They also had plenty of toys, books, clothes, etc.

    Great deals!!!

  • Wow Jem you did well :)!!!!

There is only an early thing for people who are members, which is the night before & I can't go to that anyway... and I will not be able to get my husband to go there at 7am (it is a 30 min drive), plus my parents will be in town & won't be leaving until 7 or 8am, so I guess I might be out of luck w/ some of the good stuff but maybe I can grab a few things, who knows!

Good to know that others have gotten good deals/items!!!!!

  • I'm a member so I was able to shop early - last year I scored - toys, an exersaucer (best buy), clothes.  Oh and I found 2 sleep saks for $5!  Huge savings - they were barely used.

I'm selling at my first MoM sale next weekend!  Hoping to make more than I spend :)
