wdyt: email to boss re: maternity leave

long story short, i decided to try to do something similar with this baby as i did with dd - which is 6 weeks completely off (STD) followed by 6 weeks of super flexible work from home using sick leave mostly and billing hours that i do work. my job is of a nature that makes it appropriate and it was a win-win: extended my time off and let me stay involved without taking me away from DD and the company didn't have to do without me completely.

i have a new boss (whom i hate) this time around and i told him what we did before and what i hoped to. after we had a meeting in which he kept mentioning maybe me coming into the office during the 2nd 6 weeks (i kept saying no but he kept ignoring me and mentioning it again), i wrote a prof email detailing what we talked about and included a bullet stating that i didn't plan to be available in the office.

he wrote back "I  discussed the possible need to have you in the office at times after STD. " i thought about letting it drop but finally wrote back:

"Of course I can do my best to be available if there is a need to be in the office, but I need to plan to be at home and will not be able to promise availability in the office at particular days/times.

I?m hoping that this will work out as well as it did during my leave with [DD]; please let me know if you would prefer that I plan to be completely off on STD followed by sick leave for a total of 10 weeks. Thanks,"

wdyt? does that come off b*tchy? i feel like i'm making a mountain out of a molehill but im also nervous that he's going to ask me to come to misc meetings, etc, and im really not okay with that.

Re: wdyt: email to boss re: maternity leave

  • I think it is good, comes off direct and to the point, showing that youa re not willing to come n and if that is a problem, you wont be able to wor at all.  Take it or leave it!
  • What is your company's policy with regard to leave and STD? Are you asking for more than the max, or being flexible during the second six weeks? I'm asking not to be snarky, but that would color my answer of how to respond. Also, does your company allow you to use sick leave to fill in the gaps?
