Robbie post surgery update.

I only have a minute, but wanted to thank everyone for their prayers.

The surgery went great. Took about 90 minutes which the surgeon expected.. he was off the vent before they left the O.R.

Surgeon said it went well. He said Robbie had a lot of interabdominal esophogus (which he didn't the first time because he was so small) and he added some extra tacks to keep it down attached to the diaphragm like it should.

he did add a couple of extra stitches into his gastrostomy site just to keep it from coming loose during the surgery- those will come out tomorrow.

He also got circ'ed (which I have to say looks gruesome.)

The bad part has been pain management. The doctor thought he'd just need tyelnol.

Well, so far he's had 2 doses of fentanyl and a dose of morphine (and just about due for his 2nd) and he's still waking every few minutes whining in pain.

He spent most of the afternoon and early evening crying, and grunting with every breath. His poor little hands were shaking from the pain. He kept setting off the monitors with high heart rate (up into the 230 range at one point!) which is what finally got the surgeon paged and the morphine ordered.

The morphine has improved things quite a bit in that he's not constantly crying anymore, but he's still waking about every 5 minutes and grunting and whining. I keep hoping he'll sleep a little while and wake up feeling better, but so far he's still pretty uncomfortable.

We've also had trouble with his temperature. Essentially every time he would get really upset in pain, his temp would spike. when they took us back to the recovery room, his temp was up and they were trying to cool him.. it was about 101.

He finally got a tylenol suppository and my husband and I fanned him and dabbed him with a cool cloth and got him close to normal. But it spiked up several times during the day. I haven't been able to hold him much because jostling him around hurts him and my body heat is just cooking him.

Anyway, hopefully he'll be better by morning.. but if he's still actively in pain, I'm sure we'll be stuck here a while longer.
We're up in the PICU for recovery which BLOWS. They're private rooms, but no bathrooms at all (I have to use the public waiting area bathroom) and no bed or fold out couch for me. I'll be sleeping in a recliner tonight. It's a lot like being back in the highest level of NICU. SUCKY.

(Oh.. and there was a moment when the nurse gathered him up in a hospital blanket and handed him to me while managing all his tubes and wires and for half a second, I was back in the NICU again. I thought I was going to be sick.)

Anyway.. thanks for the prayers. Keep them coming...
