Questions about infant carseats

1. When do you think you would stop carrying your infant around in your carseat. DD is getting heavy in hers. Do people just stop when they can hold their head up super well on their own?

2. When do you take out the insert that comes in the carseat to hold their heads in the middle.

3. At about what age will you transition to the next size up carseat.

Re: Questions about infant carseats

  • We just ordered our convertible car seat (Recaro, the Woot deal!) and will put her in it around 6 months. I pick that just because the weather will be warmer and she will be able to have a chance to see out the windows. I am no opposed to putting her in it earlier but I would like to get some more use out of our infant carrier.

  • 1. It depends where we are going. If it's target or somewhere that I can just put the carseat in a cart, then I keep her in the seat. Same with restaurants, coffee shops, etc. Smaller places I take her out, or if I won't be in long.

    2. We took out the insert three weeks ago

    3. We don't know yet.

  • 1. I have never really left her in the car seat much because she always hated it. Usually I carry her in the bjorn inside stores. Now that she is happy in her car seat, if I am just going in for a quick trip, I'll leave her in the car seat. I'd say it's 50/50. But I do feel awkward carrying the big ol' thing around!

    2. I still have the insert in her's. When she was smaller we had a double insert but we took that out several months ago. I'd say take it out as soon as it doesn't seem to fit anymore...

    3. The rear facing infant car seat is required until 1 year

  • My DD was in hers until 20 months.  I never really carried it around.  I mostly just would put it in the snap n go or a grocery cart.  I only left her in it if she was asleep.  It was nice if she fell asleep on the way home because I could bring her in and let her keep sleeping, but that is mostly what I used it for, other than just running in the coffee shop or dry cleaner.  Otherwise, it is a lot easier to hold a small baby than carry a 10 pound seat and a small baby, which is what seems to end up happening.

    1. I will probably carry him in it until he's too big for it - I do heavy lifting at work, so a 16lb baby + 6lb seat is not a big deal for me.

    2. I took the insert out a few weeks ago and could have done it sooner but didn't really think about it.

    3. We're hoping to get to at least 6mos before we have to buy a convertible, but it all depends on how fast he continues to grow. He's most likely going to grow out of the infant seat lengthwise first.

  • 1. When do you think you would stop carrying your infant around in your carseat.

Its very convenient now but she is 16 lbs and HARD for me to carry too. I will stop probably in the next month or 2.

    2. When do you take out the insert that comes in the carseat to hold their heads in the middle.

I did about 2 months ago (at 3.5 months old)

    3. At about what age will you transition to the next size up carseat.

I already got her a Britax Marathon and will transition in the next 2 months

  • 1. Soon for me. She's just getting too heavy. DH can probably manage a bit longer.

    2. We took ours out at about 4 mo. She had good control of her head, and was outgrowing it.

    3. We're hoping to hold out till about 1 yo, but if DD keeps growing at the pace she is, it might be before then.
