Tip for cleaning out closets

I wanted to share a little tip on how to clean out/organize your DH's old mess...or your own if you are a pack rat.

If your DH has tons of shirts/t-shirts/pants/shoes, etc. then take about 10% of them (most likely the ones you hate and are duplicates) and just hide them...store them in a basement, attic, etc.  If in 1 month he has not asked for them...then give the box to goodwill.

Most likely he has no need for those extra items and does not even remember he has them.  If you ask your DH to do it, then he wont.  This rule applies for all pack rats.  My rule...if I have not worn it in 6 months, then its not something I NEED.

I am a strong believer in "Spring Cleaning", so I do this about twice a year and it really helps keep the drawers organized and makes room in your closet.

Good Luck! Babies have small clothes but they have a Sh!itload of it so it ends up taking more space than imagined.

Re: Tip for cleaning out closets

  • I think you should email this to my DH....I have a tendency of being a pack rat! I have to be in an unsetimental mood to throw stuff out and then I will.  But if I start reminiscing (even with stupid things), I won't throw it out.  It's my curse:-)

  • I also have seen where you tag the clothes and if you have not worn them in that season, then you get rid of them. I think I will just separate the clothes by age and color. Nothing that he wore in HS and no more than 2 polo shirts in the exact same color.
  • That's a good idea. I love decluttering and cleaning out closets! Luckily, my DH has gotten pretty good at identifying what he actually needs/wants to keep, and what he's just holding onto for no real reason...I think I'm rubbing off on him.

  • LOL!  I do that with DH's hats!
  • I do this on a regular basis; and have sucessfully gotten rid of most of the clothes DH loves, but I hate.  Ratty old shirts from college, shirts in florescent colors, shirts that should have never been made, shirts that are 4 sizes too big, most of them are gone!! I'm lucky, because he doesn't notice ever, he only wants to wear something if he sees it!!

Now if I could only keep him from leaving things strewn all over the floor and bed, I'd be the luckiest woman alive!!

  • I do this to, but with this variation:

I put hook all the hangers in my closet backwards (from behind the rod), and hang all clothes on it like that. When I go to wear something, or have washed and worn, it goes back on the hanger and the hanger goes on the rod frontwards (the proper way).

That way in a couple of months time, I can tell very quickly what I'm not wearing... which is whatever is still on the backwards hangers.

    Make sense?

    :)
