Lifetime of mispronounciations

My best friend's younger brother (who is 20 yrs. old) and his immature girlfriend who just wanted a baby even though she doesn't have a job or savings named their baby.  They are pronouncing the name like Michaela or McKayla but it will be spelt Miquela.  Since the girlfriend is part hispanic she wanted to spell it like this since "que" in Spanish sounds like "kay."  I have never heard of this name being spelt like this and would hate it if it were my name.  My husband is half Venezuelan and we wouldn't ever consider something like this when we have a kid.

Re: Lifetime of mispronounciations

  • If you accept the McKayla corruption of the original name Michaela, why not this one? It's exactly the same thing, changing the original name for cultural reasons. Actually, this is a little better, since the McK change is usually not used by Scottish people but just because people like the Gaelicness of it. At least she's using it as a nod to her culture.

I am a big fan of the original spelling, but I think that people are largely ignorant, and this name is spelled so many different ways, the one I am most likely to here mispronounced is the original Michaela. (I often here Michael-ah.) It probably will be mispelled mroe than mispronounced.

  • I actually like the spelling.

  • I don't care for the name either way it's spelled, but looking at they way they want to spell it...I only see 1 way to pronounce it so it doesn't seem like that big of a deal.
  • i think that observing her heritage is cool, but does she know that miquela translates literally to "me that the"

    it's a little odd...

  • I don't like the name, or the way it's spelled, but sounding-it-out, I would still pronounce it "correctly". What's going to be a PITA for that child is always having her name misspelled (that I know ALL about!). ugh.

  • I bet people will often pronounce it MICK-eh-la or Mi-KWAY-la. I'm not a fan, obvs.
  • While I agree that the spelling is horrible, I think I 'd know how to pronounce if I read it.

I love the name Makayla, but hate their spelling. I'm surprised to see this name be so disliked. All my friends like it too.
  • what's really weird about this is that the name actually exists in Spanish and is spelled Micaela and it is not in any way pronounced like Mi-que-la. It's pronounced Mi-ka-e-la in Spanish. As a Spanish speaker, my eyes immediately focus on the "que" here and make the surrounding letters not seem like a name.

just because separately "mi que la" translates into "me that/what the" doesn't mean that it still translates that way when it is run all together.

  • I'm full hispanic and didn't even pronounce it "Que" when I first read it.
  • OH NO! That poor child!
  • I understand the frustration... I don't like the spelling but it sounds like the whole situation is a bit messed up and that may be what is truly upsetting you... what is done is done, it is not how I would spell it but now all you can do is be supportive to the baby.
