Sunglasses for toddlers?

I want to get R a pair of sunglasses for this summer.  She's pretty rough with things, so flexible ones are good, but I don't like the ones with the strap around the head that I've seen in the One Step Ahead catalog.  All the others I've seen are hard plastic that I know she'd just snap in a day or two.

Have you found any that you like for you DC?  If so, where?

Re: Sunglasses for toddlers?

  • S has two pair from Gymbo and two from TCP. The Gymbo ones were more money, but are a lot more durable. They are all hard though (like regular sunglasses) but she loves wearing them and has never tried to break them.?
  • DD has a few pairs from Gymboree, she loves them!  Yesterday, we were at the zoo and it was sunny and she said 'mamma, glasses please'.  It was so funny.  She wouldn't take them off after we got to the car and fell asleep in them :)  They are just regular sunglasses.

  • I bought DD some at rei.  We have had the wrap around ones too.  Total waste of money.  DD broke them after about 6 months.  I only let her wear them for some time, like when we go bike riding, it is really sunny in the car, ect.  Not at the playground or use them as a toy.  I would probably just get the $1 ones at the dollar store if I had it to do over.
  • we got ds a piar from target. They are diego and he loves them. He's never tried to break them
  • I've tried buying him some cheapies from Gymboree, CP and Target.  But he won't wear them.  He wants to wear my DH's thin wire frame Maui Jim's or these cool kids aviator glasses from RayBan (he tries them on every time we go the eye doctor and hates taking them off)

I've tried cheap versions of the aviators and he won't wear them.  The Maui's I've never seen anything like them for kids.  Though Maui makes a small pair that DS could easily wear but I refuse to spend that much on a pair of toddler sunglasses...Maybe when he's older and has started sailing and actually needs good sunglasses.  As for the aviators, they're way less than the Maui's but still more than I'm going to spend at this point.

I guess he can already tell the difference...we live in the South so eye protection is needed year round...hopefully he'll come around and wear the cheapie plastic ones...
