support hose

My doctor suggested that I wear support hose to prevent varicose veins.  Did anyone else wear them during pregnancy and where do you buy them?

Re: support hose

  • I had to wear them when i was pregnant with my twins. I live in Mass so my dr had to write a script for my husbands insurance to cover it. They are located in medical supply stores so if you have any of those type of stores in your area you can call if you have to buy out of pocket they cost like 150.00 or at least 100.00 they arent cheap at all. I hated putting them on they where a pain but they helped for the most part. I even wore them in the summer but lucky i was working in a air condition building at that time of my pregnancy. well good luck. So i would call your dr's office to get a script and it depends how she words it for the insurance to cover it or not.
  • I wore them during my pregnancy because my father had a stroke last year and they were worried about blood clots.  I just wore ones I could buy online or at CVS/RiteAid.  They cost me about $15/pair online.  Some I liked better than others, but I think you just have to try them and see.

  • Do you need the compression hose, like the medical kind, or would regular support hose do the trick?  I know the maternity stores carry support hose.  I just checked Motherhood Maternity's website and they have some, not very expensive either.  No clue how supportive they are, but at least you could find out for $10 or less if you just need the regular kind.
  • Thanks for all of the advice.  My doctor did not say I needed the medical kind and she is pretty thorough.  I would call but MA is buried in snow right now and the office is closed.  Perhaps if I can dig out tonight I will go and buy some regular and see how those go.
