Re: If you have a child that is always congested

  • Does he have a lot of ear infections?

L ended up having severly enlarged adenoids, which always made him sound stuffy and keep getting the same sicknesses over & over & over.  Enlarged adenoids can also contribute to numerous ear infections.  If this is the case, it might be worth her meeting with an ENT to explore the possibility.

Could be allergies, our ENT suggested we have L tested for everything, across the board, before removing his adenoids.  We did, everything came back negative and when they went in to take his adenoids, they said they were extremely enlarged, blocking 95% of his sinus cavity.

  • has she seen an ENT?

Often chronic congestion/cough is caused by reflux.  ENTs and ped allergists will look at this as a cause (regular pedis often do not).  I sell Prevacid and know many children who have been "cured" of their chronic cough, sinusitis, and even some people from headaches, by taking meds for acid reflux.

  • Thanks.. She said she will ask for a referral to the ENT.

  • My nephew was constantly congested and ended up having his extremely enlarged adnoids removed when he was around 2. It was like night and day after he had the surgery. He's going to be 7 next month and has started to get the congestion back, so the doctors are doing tests to see if the adnoids are growing back or if his tonsils are the problem. He may have to have surgery again. :(

  • My kids take Claritin daily b/c they're constantly congested.  DS also takes nose spray.  They have FAs and seasonal allergies and this has been recommended by their Ped and allergist.
