Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How many naps does your baby take during the day?

I've been unsuccessful in getting my DD (2 months old) to nap during the day although she will sleep during the night. The pediatrician told me to try to get her to nap after 2 hours since she woke up.

Today, she woke up at 11am and finally we got her to sleep at 7pm - although this might mean that she'll want to play tonight....

For putting her to bed at night, I usually nurse her and put her directly in bed after. I don't know if this is giving her a bad habit though....

How many naps does your child take during the day and how long? Do you have any rituals/routines for getting your child to take a nap?

Also, how long does your baby sleep at night? I worry that if she sleeps a lot in the early evening that she'll be up in the middle of the night....

Re: How many naps does your baby take during the day?

  • DD has been STTN for about a month now (knock on wood) but she only takes about 2-3 short naps during the day maybe 20-30 minutes each.

  • She sleeps 11pm-7am, then is up for about 1 hour at a time then naps for 2 hours and takes a good long stretch from 1-4/5. Then 8-10 and only gets up to eat.
  • DS takes about 4-5 naps a day which can range from 45 - 2 1/2 hours.  The longer the nap the less naps he takes.  He's pretty much on a routine (although we weren't the ones who got him on it - he did it himself).  So, he eats as soon as he wakes up, plays and stays awake for a good 1-2 hours.  Then, eats again and naps after his lunch.  Wakes up sometime in the afternoon and plays again.  Takes a late afternoon to evening nap.  Stays awake again, eats dinner, takes a 1-2 hour nap at night.  Eats a late dinner and back to bed.  He will wake up at least 2-3 times at night.

  • DD is about a month older than your DD but even at two months she would nap about every two hours for about 30 min. But most of the time we would have to hold her or she would wake up. She would fall asleep nursing and then I would hold her til she woke up. On rare occassions she would nap for an hour plus.

Now, DD goes to bed anywhere between 7:30-9:00 (depending on naps that day). She's been STTN for the most part (I have to get up and put her paci back in) until the last week she has woken up and wanted to eat in the middle of the night. We wake up around 7:30-8am and then she is up for a couple hours, then takes a morning nap: I nurse her and she falls asleep, I wait abotu 5 minutes then go put her in her crib. She only sleeps about half and hour. For the rest of the day, she'll nap every 2-3 hours for about 30-45 minutes.

  • We do the 3-hour EASY routine, per the Baby Whisperer- so DS is up for about 1-1.5 hours then naps for 1.5-2 hours, eating every 3 hours. This sometimes varies and he'll take a longer nap and go 4 hours in between eating, or he will only nap for 30 minutes for one of the naps.... but I try not to have him up for more than 2 hours or he is a total beast.
