XP: What should I pay?

So my house has become a complete disaster because I just can't keep up and my desire to spend time with the girls wins out over cleaning every day.  So, I'm going to have a neighbor girl (she's 14 or 15) come over for a few hours each week to watch the girls so I can get some work done.  The goal is to be able to move into her babysitting the girls by herself somewhere down the road. She has her certifications but no experience with infants yet.  The big question is what is fair to pay her?  She won't be totally by herself but she will be responsible for the girls unless she needs help. Obviously, I know there are some regional differences in what is appropriate, but does anyone else do something like this? TIA!

Re: XP: What should I pay?

  • We are in Central NJ and I paid a mother's helper $9/hour - she was 21 and had experience, but another girls I used asked for $10 and another $12 - all experienced. For this area that is cheap for 2 children. I would ask some other mother's in your area what is standard and also ask the girls what she would like to be paid and come to a decision from there.
  • we pay my 15 y/o niece $5/hour to be a mommy's helper for our DS... so a young girl with 2 babies doing that - i'd say maybe $8?  but make sure it's worth it for you- otherwise hire a cleaning lady :) lol  though prepping her to be a real baby sitter might be worth extra money over a cleaning lady.

  • I would think $7 is fair...considering she is young and you will be home.
