Baby Names

Italian Names

DH is italian (his dad came over from italy in his early 20s~ and dh speaks italian fluently)~ it is tradition in his family that they name the boy after the grandfather (dh's father)~

1st question:  DH wants to name our son, Vito (after dh's father)~ i am not fond of this name for several reasons- i don't like the name period and it reminds me of an old boss i had, not his dad!  What do you think of the name?

2nd question:  What are some other really italian sounding names for both a boy and a girl?  (i have tried websites and books and nothing is popping out at me!)

TIA!

Re: Italian Names

  • No, I don't like Vito at all.  Maybe a middle name?

I do like Matteo, Leo, Alessia, Sofia, Gianna, Giovanna, Francesca, Allegra.

  • Vito is better as a middle name. Like, Anthony Vito or Carmine Vito. I agree with PP's suggestion of names, especially the girl ones. GL.
  • My daughter is Angelina. Also loved Silvana, Marianna, Arianna.

    Boys names:

    Vincent(cenzo)

    Dominic (Nicky)

    Gianfranco, or just franco

  • I agree with PP's on some of the names they listed I love Vincent and I love Arianna (thats actually on our list).

?Vito reminds me of the Godfather and I agree its better suited for a middle name. ??

  • Thanks for all of the suggestion!  I have on my previous list (not in baby name poll) Luca, Dominic, Anthony (or Antonio) and Lorenzo.  I would like any of those names.  Thanks for the suggestion Vittorio (that seems like it would be a good full name for Vito~ but still don't want the kid called Vito).  I have Sophia on my list as well for girls~ Viviana has a beautiful ring to it and not that common!  I have always loved Bianca growing up, but for some reason, it's not clicking for me now.

    Newportbride:

Thanks for the comments on Luciana, Gabriella and Gianna!  I LOVE the name Luciana (i kinda put two names together on that one~ not sure if it really exists!~ i love the name Luci for a little girl).  Luciana, Sophia, Gianna and Gabriella are my top fav girl names (in that order)~ i just have to sell them to DH!

  • When I hear "Vito," I immediately think of The Godfather.

I think Antonia, Gianna, and Francesca are really pretty Italian names. Sorry - not much help on boys' names.

  • Vito makes me think of Don VitoStick out tongue I love Gianna, Giovanna, and Arianna for girls. I'm not much help on boys' names, either - sorry!
  • I need to pick Italian names as well my DH mother came over from italy.  So far we have Gianna, Lianna, and Lucia for girls names.

Boys is harder.  We have Luca, Teo, and Nicollo.

Luciana is beautiful.  I knew someone named Luciana growing up and she was italian.

  • DD would have been Lucca if she were a boy, so I love that name.
  • LOL, DH has an uncle Vito, FIL names is Silverio.  BLEH!

I think Giovanni (jo-vanni, I hate when people say Geo-vanni) is a beautiful boys name. I also like Arturo is nice!

DH's Grandfather is Michele, which is why DH is Michael.  Michele is a a really beautiful name, but it looks like Michelle with one L.

  • What if you used Vito as a middle name?

    What about Joseph, Vincent, Anthony?

  • One of my best friends is named Silvana. Her mother is from Italy.?
  • Boys are hard. I think it's a lot harder for a Italian boy's name to go mainstream. It comes off kitschy, or sounds all mobstery. (Don't flame me. These are the reasons I heard from my husband, a 2nd gen Italian-American.) I couldn't find one Italian boy's name he liked.

Girls names are beautiful. I like Allessandra, Giovanna, Gianna, Giulianna, Chianna, Gaetana, Luisa, Sistina, and our girl pick, Marianna.

  • We're naming our little boy Luca Vittorio! Vito to me is a little too old fashioned for a baby...once he's older it's not so bad.
  • I forgot to add Aurelia to my girls' list. I love that name!
  • Marina for a girl.
