Babies: 9 - 12 Months

how do you steam veggies/fruits?

Do you need a special steamer? Or is there another way to steam it?

(for baby food making purposes)

Re: how do you steam veggies/fruits?

  • I mostly do some less traditional steaming.  Instead of using a steam basket, i put the veggies in a small pot and add 1/4 cup of water.  This is not nearly enough to cover the veggies but it is enough to steam them.  I then use that same water to make the puree smooth.  For carrots however, I used a steam basket but I won't be doing so next time.

  • Yes, until soft.  It's usually about 20 minutes for veg if you cut them into small pieces and about 1o to 15 minutes for fruits.  For example, I do two pears, 2 apples, one sweet potato etc a time (not together, each separate).
  • BTW, your baby looks just like you!
  • oh awesome! thanks for the info!

I'm gonna try making my own food. =) woo hoo!

  • I use these steam bags by Glad. You just cut the veggies up, toss them in the bag and microwave for 3 minutes.
  • Ditto the pp.  I use the Ziploc Steamer bags.  It requires no thinking and no effort.  Tells you how long to microwave for right on the bag.

  • I just bought a steamer (~$30) to make it simple (but those bags sound great too!) ?The nice thing with the steamer is it has two layers/levels so I can steam two foods at one time.

  • I use a steamer basket I bought for a few bucks at the grocery store.  I also tried steaming in the microwave with just a little water in a dish.  It wasn't great but worked for just making enough for 1 meal when we were trying a new finger food.  I would recommend a steamer basket because it is cheap and easy.
