Breast augmentation question

I asked over in breastfeeding, but its a bit slower over there...

I had a boob job done a few years ago, and was assured at the time by the surgeon that there was no risk to breastfeeding, but I've read conflicting reports online (mostly ones with clear agendas).  Some say its a big no, some say no problem, and others say limited milk production.  Anyone with personal experience (past mamas) or in the same boat?

Thanks Big Smile

Re: Breast augmentation question

  • I had an augmentation about 4 years ago, and my Dr then and OB now both said it wasn't an issue and would not interfere with bf.

  • not sure here either. this is my first time around, and I too had breast augmentation years ago. I think in 2002. This is a good question though......
  • I believe a reduction causes more problems then an augmentation.
  • Did they go in from the nipple?  I heard that can cause problems, but I'm not a Dr.

  • I am on the same boat. I had my boobs done 10 years ago and have been concerned about breastfeeding. I spoke with my doc and she said it should not be a problem. I am going to try and see what happens.

  • I heard too its the reductions that cause more problems than augmentations.  Mine was inserted under the nipple (which is supposed to be worse), but under the muscle (which is supposed to be better)...so I guess its a wait and see thing.

  • Here's a link to a site called Breast Feeding After Reduction - it also addresses BFing after augmentation. I had a reduction 10 yrs ago and it did limit my ability to nurse my son - however, reduction is a completely different ballgame than augmentation. Hope this helps.

  • I had a breast augmentation in 2000, through the nipple. I had DD last March and had no problems breast feeding. I did  have to supplement my supply some and only breast fed for four months. I had supply issues with my first DD prior to the surgery and only breast fed her for 6 weeks. I don't feel that the breast aug. hurt bf in any way.

    Hope that helps!

  • I know two friends who have successfully breast fed after augmentation. They had no problems at all.?

I was going to have a reduction about a year ago and decided to wait until after we had a baby. I saw two different surgeons and they both said that breast feeding is much more complicated after reduction. So...I will have one after I am done breast feeding. ?

  • I think it has a lot to do with where the implant was inserted. My plastic surgeon went in through the arm pit so there wasn't any actual damage to the breast itself. As long as there wasn't any cutting on the breast I don't see why there would be an issue with bf. I've read conflicting opinions on this too though. I plan on trying to bf and hopefully will be able to.
