Teachers: Need Help!

I just substitute teach and recently I took on a student to tutor.  She's in grade 1 and having trouble with reading and math........   I'm looking for ideas on how to help her in a "fun" way.  She has to come to me after school, so I want it to be something she can look forward to, but still get the help she needs.  She's a weak reader and has trouble with transitioning from addition to substraction.  So, any games or other strategies you can suggest will be helpful!

TIA!!!

Re: Teachers: Need Help!

  • If you have access to a computer during your sessions, DD got a lot out of starfall.com.  It is a fun site for reading.

And for math stuff, DD enjoys playing with money.  We pile up pennies and pretend to buy stuff (subtraction) or we figure out how much she'll earn (addition) for certain jobs.

    .
  • Try writing simple little riddles for her to solve to practice reading.  Or have her mom bring in pictures of her doing things and make up a book about her.  For math get dice and a deck of cards, manipulatives always make math more fun.

  • spellingcity.com, starfall.com (both free)

Try to find books that are about topics that interest her.
