Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Do you call your dc by their name or a nickname?

We rarely, if ever, call our DD by her name.  It seems so formal and strange because we called her peanut throughout the entire pregnancy.  We still call her peanut, but I'm starting to wonder if she's going to think that's her name.  :)

Do you use your dc's name when you speak to him/her or do you use a nickname?

Re: Do you call your dc by their name or a nickname?

  • My DH always uses his name, but I always use a nickname. I'm pretty sure he'll be confused about what his name is. Tongue Tied

  • DS is Bennett, but we intended to always call him Ben. We call him Ben, but it sounds strange when people refer to him as Bennett.

Edit: As far as cutesy nicknames, we call him "Scrunch" (because he used to scrunch up so tiny) but not usually to him, just about him.?

  • We pretty much call her by her nickname, Peach.  We don't really use her real name (Georgia) unless we're talking about her to someone else.  I agree that it just sounds so formal for such a little baby.

  • I don't think Audrey will ever know her name. I call her Bean, Beansy, Beanie and Beaner (oops) all the time. I call Natalie Nana, and my H always sings the 'oh na na' part of the Hips Swing song to her.
  • I usually call her booger bear.. Sometimes munchkin but normally booger bear.. I have been trying to remember to say her name sometimes so at least she doesn't think her name is booger bear haha
  • We use her name a lot (I read that they learn to recognize their name and the words you say closest to their name in a sentence), but we also call her hunny/hunny bunny or the GiannaMonster when she gets really hungry and flips out if you can't feed her fast enough :)

  • I always used her nickname until people were telling me that she would start thinking her name was the nickname.  So now we use both,
  • she's "lovey" or "loveybear." or Katiebug. and on and on it goes. we have lots of nicknames for her! we definitely don't call her by her full name.
  • I call her "Boopies" a lot. But I also use her real name a lot too. We try not to use Boopies in public =)
  • Nicknames.

  • Most of the time I call him "pumpkin" or "pumpkin pie."  I'm not sure why, and I don't even like pumpkin pie...Hmm  DH always calls him Spencer.

  • We do a mixture of both, but I've been trying to call DS by his name more often. I don't want him to think his name is really "Sweetpea."
  • Always by his full name or sweet baby boy. We do not want him to be called Alex - although I'm sure it will happen once he gets into school.

We always called him by his name in-utero also

  • We call him Mister a lot, but I'm try to call him Matthew most of the time.
  • I either call his real name, Alexander, or Turtle b/c he looked like a cartoon turtle when he was first born.

DH calls him by the shortened form of his name, Alek.

He responds to his full name though.

  • I almostnever use his name.  Only if someone asks what it is.  I call him My Bug, Buggy, Bug Bug, etc...

  • I use both. My daughter's name is Kendall, and I call her Kendy a lot. I also call her "Chunky Monkey" quite a bit. I should probably stop that so she doesn't think that is her name and grow up thinking she's fat! and she's not even that big, it's just her cheeks and belly.
  • mostly call him max/maxwell..but also "baby boy".

  • We call him bubba all the time...don't know why, just kinda happened and it stuck. Or we call him Coley. He is probably really confused :)
  • I love these nicknames!!

We call her Cami.. but we also call her Cami Bear or Bean or Jelly Bean.

  • Recently I've been calling her Lyla more often... but most of the time, we just call her "La". Sometimes "Lala".
  • We call Colin 'turtle' cause he does this funny thing with his head/neck that reminds me of a turtle sticking it's head out of the shell, LOL! How cruel! But he's so cute when he does it.....It just stuck:)
  • I've been trying to call her Madeline more often, but I usually call her "Bear."  It started out as Baby Bear back when we first came home from the hospital, and I quickly shortened it to Bear.  I have no idea why I did this.  I didn't plan to be a cutesy nickname kind of person.  Also, I wish I'd come up with something better.  SIL calls her 4-year-old Claire Bear, but just last month, I heard her call her Bear.  Ugh.  I didn't want to copy!  :)

DH calls her Maddie Fat Pants on account of her cloth diapers.

We use 'little man' (or 'little guy') or 'bug' too...and bug usually turns into cuddlebug, stinkbug, lovebug, etc.  I'm with many of the pp, DS's name (Wesley) is very formal and "big" to me!  I'm trying to use it more, but it's hard...it usually turns into "Baby Wesley" (and my husband is slowly turning into "Big Wes").

  • I call him by his name or I call him Kiddo.  DH calls him CoJo (for Conrad John) and it drives me crazy.
  • I usually call her Avery or Aves.  My mom calls her pumpkin pie face for some reason.  I also call her baby girl, stinky pants, and fusser butt.
  • I call mine "little stinky" most of the time.  I try to call him by his name but it doesn't happen much.
  • We call her Stasa b/c she was named after my H's yia yia and that's what she was called. Plus I didn't want her name shortened to Stacey or Ana.

  • I have to say I think the names that everyone calls their kids are so cute!  I'm glad I'm not the only one using a nickname/cutesy name with my dd.  :)
