First & Last Names that start with the same letter/sound

My last name starts with Car___ (3 syllables).  I am really drawn to first names that also begin with a hard C (K) sound and sometimes even the first 3 letters are the same as our last name (way too similar to use, I know). Do those kind of names sound funny? They do to me, but just want to make sure before I completely rule them out. I'm kind of bummed, there are so many great C/K names I love.

opinions?

Re: First & Last Names that start with the same letter/sound

  • My first and last initial are the same...last name since getting married.  If I like the name enough and it sounded good together, I would use it....but I wouldn't necessarily do it on purpose...ya know?

  • I definitely think it can work - especially when it's the beginning of the name that sounds the same.

For example, Carissa Carter sounds good (IMO!). BUT, Parker Carter sounds bad (and maybe that was a bad example because it's rhyme-y and the same ending, but still...).

    Know what I mean?!

  • I don't think they sound funny as long as they don't rhyme. Like, a PP mentioned Parker Carter. That doesn't work. As for the first and last names starting with the same letter, I think it's cute. Colin Carter, Connor Carter, Chloe Carter, Caroline Carter... they all work. HTH!
  • I don't think it's a problem at all.  A lot of celebs have names like that.  I would avoide names that start with the same first few letters.

  • Ok, good to know it might not be too matchy matchy depending on the name.  Some are better than others and I definitely wouldn't do the rhyming thing.  I am going to put them on my maybe list for now!

    thanks!

  • I agree with what the other ladies have said. It all depends on how the names flow together. I'm not a big fan of a first name and middle name having the same starting letter, but for some reason, it doesn't bother me when it comes to first and last names. Definitely has a celebrity ring to itCool
  • Definitely works! I'm an example of what you're talking about (my maiden name).?
  • my mother in law named my brother in law and sister in law with crazy alliteration and suggested that my dh and i do the same.  i don't like it, but i know some people do.  if you are going to go with the same beginning sound, i would stick to a first letter or sound (C or K) and not a first 3-letter blend.  just my opinion.
  • I ran into this too, and had to sacrifice a lot of my favorite names because they started with the same sound as our last name.  Personally, I can't stand the alliteration.  On the other hand, I know of a lot of people who actually seek it out and deliberately use the same sound.  It just comes down to personal preference.
  • Overall, I'm not a fan of alliteration in names.  But, there are some examples where it doesn't sound too "cartoony".

I can't stand names that rhyme, like PP suggested - "Parker Carter" - that is horrible.

It really, really depends on the specific names.  More of them sound bad than good, but there are some good examples out there.  "Kasey Cardigan", for example, sounds like a cartoon character.  But, "Corrine Carmichael" sounds okay.

  • I have a friend that's Stacy Sterns and I think it sounds fine. Michelle Mitchell is too similar though. I know someone who is named Woody Woodward. That is ridiculous.?
  • DH is Chris K. Think Calvin Klein. Not bad. My cousin is Megan Marie Mc___, which I actually think sounds nice.
