NBR... need help with an engagement gift

Hi ladies. Thought maybe you could help me. I am standing up in one of my best friend's weddings and her engagement party is this Saturday. What do you get as a gift for such an occasion? I've officially never given an engagement gift, so I'm hoping for some suggestions. Under $50 please. Thanks!!!

I like to get a nice bottle of champagne for them to open on their first anniversary.

Are they registered?  I always get the engagement/bridal shower gift off the registry and give money at the wedding.

No, they aren't registered yet, unfortunately. They aren't getting married till October 2010!?

We received a SHIIITLOAD of gift cards, wedding books to help plan the wedding, spa treatments ( w a note that said, this will help with some of the stress of a wedding), uhm picture frames, photo albums, oh and the BEST was a chocolate fountain.. and my 2 of my friends worked together. One got the fountain, the other got a gift card to Chiradelli for more chocolate. OH and my one gf made us shirts that said.. Im with her and Im with him in Spanish. They were hilarious...

Just ideas.. but you cant go wrong with a Visa/AmEX giftcard either
