Snarky and T-TTC

Would you request SA?

I have my annual this Friday and I'm wondering if I should ask about SA even though we've only been TTC for 8 months.

DH and I have already talked about it and we both agree that SA should be the next step for us since my charts don't point to any obvious problems, my endo says my thyroid is in prime range now, and our timing has been pretty spot on every month.  It's just a matter of when we should take this next step.  If I didn't have this appt we probably wouldn't be thinking about it for another couple months, but since I'll have face time with the doc on Friday I'm thinking it might be a good time to talk to her about it.  Is that jumping the gun?  WWYD?

  • I don't think it's jumping the gun to ask the doc about it.  It's an easy enough first step - but you are still in the normal timeframe, so don't be upset/disappointed if they tell you to wait a bit longer.

  • I wish H had asked for one sooner. But I'm old and running out of time
  • I asked my doc about it at my last annual when we had been TTC for 7 months.  I figured I'm already there, might as well bring it up.  He told me to wait another three months and if we still don't have any luck to send DH back in for a SA.  I say ask and see what your doc says.

  • I suppose you can always ask, but your Dr may or may not do anything.  FWIW, I had my annual around Thanksgiving and my ob/gyn basically told me there was no reason to worry and that I could come back when it had been a year (Jan) if I wanted to. Some Dr's are sticklers for the year rule, so don't be too dissapointed if yours is one of them.

  • I brought my charts into an OB appt that I had at nine months TTC, so I could show them to the OB, see if she had any thoughts or would recommend any tests. She recommended tests, all right. Lots of them. All of them. And I'll be totally honest with you, I don't think I was emotionally prepared for it. I remember going in for cd3 bloodwork that month--it was a Sunday, so I had to do it at a hospital lab.

The tech said, "So what's the diagnosis code for this?"

And I said, "There is no diagnosis yet. It's a fertility workup."

And he said, "Oh, you're infertile."

And I said, "Well, no it's a workup."

It was a stupid conversation, but I'm telling you: It rocked me to my core. I was just not ready to be having a conversation like that. Period.

What ended up happening was this: The OB found that I had low progesterone, and recommended I do IUIs. I was FREAKED out. Totally questioned that she was going straight to IUIs, thought maybe she wasn't qualified, and decided that if I was going to do fertility treatments at all, I wanted to do them with an RE, not with an OB. So I made an appointment with an RE, which took quite a while. RE questioned the test results. I did an unmedicated cycle to investigate. Low progesterone was confirmed, and it is in fact quite low; the RE has me doing Clomid IUIs and progesterone supplements starting this month. I'm on cycle 14. And now, unlike then, I'm emotionally prepared for it.

My point is this: Wait. Just wait. Give yourself a full year, and then, if you're not pregnant, go to an RE and get the tests done. If I had done that, I would be in exactly the same place I am right now, on exactly the same timeline, except that I wouldn't have spent the last five months stressing the F out and second guessing myself.

That was a long response, but whatever. I have strong feelings about this.?

  • Do it if you think it will bring you peace of mind.

We had one in Dec, which was earlier than the year mark, but only b/c DH has some bloodwork and other symptoms that caused us worry. He is fine.

That said, I have regular cycles, lots of good quality CM, thermal shift, etc, etc and yet my bloodwork came back indicating some problems.

    So don't make assumptions.
