Toddlers: 24 Months+

s/o: What age for markers?

We've only been doing crayons. I'm not really worried about the mess - we let her fingerpaint! - but have never done markers. She's been known to take a nibble out of crayons still ("I eating crayon"), so I think that's part of it.

So, what age for markers?

Re: s/o: What age for markers?

  • We do colorwonder markers. So far, so good. I started those around 18 monthsish

  • A little younger than a year. Markers made more of an impact on paper than a crayon did so we did more markers first. They don't taste all that good so Jack tasted them, made a face and moved on from that.
  • I bought DD those toddler markers.  They are little round animals, with a marker on the bottom.  She hasn't quite figured them out yet, but they say for 18 months.

At DD's b-day party I bought a bunch of markets and paper for the older kids to use and my friends son, who was 17 months at the time had a blast with them!

    I say try it out! : )

  • We started with Crayola washable markers at about 18 months.  We tried the rounded animal ones because we thought those would be easier - we hated them - took them back!  We've also bought crayons that are sort of like mechanical pencils and she does great with those!
  • DS is 2 yrs 4 months and he does really well with markers at this point.  I got him the Crayola Pip Squeeks which are just smaller and easier for him to hold.  He can take the caps off and put them back on himself and rarely gets them on his hands.

FWIW - I can't stand the TaDoodles (little animal ones).  DS had those when he was much younger, but they are hard to hold cause they are fat, the felt marker part is on the top so its near impossible to pick them up without getting marker on your hand and they don't have lids.

  • hmmm, I'm thinking age 3...!
  • We used, and still do use, the Pipsqueak markers. I bought those egg shaped animals and they were really hard for Jack to hold. He caught on with the Pipsqueaks right away.
