Beta test prior to first appointment?

So when i called yesterday for my first appointment, they said absolutely nothing about a blood test prior to confirm pregnancy. I actually called back and asked if it is usually protocol to do so. They said no and that my positive pregnancy test was enough and that I would get bloodwork at the appointment. Is this common?

It's the norm unless you have a medical reason to have a beta (IF, recurrent m/c)

I only had mine tested because we were in infertility treatment.

I insisted on having mine tested prior to my first appointment because I had a miscarriage last year. Otherwise, they won't take blood until the first time you see the OB.
