3rd Trimester

What are you ideas on membrane stripping...

I understand that this can be painful/uncomfortable... but I'm wondering...

My dr is looking at inducing on Sunday or the begining of next week... I have an appt today to discuss it and also to have an internal.

If he is planning on inducing, would it be a bad idea to ask him to go ahead and strip my membranes today to see if I can go myself before the induction?

I'd like to go as natural as possible, and don't know too much about membrane stripping and just thought I'd ask.

TIA

Re: What are you ideas on membrane stripping...

  • My Dr. has NEVER even mentioned membrane stripping. I may ask her Friday at my appt as well. She is going to induce me as well early next week if I have progress at my internal Friday. I might ask as well...

  • You do know though you can refuse the induction lol. I want the early induction so I'm fine with it but it seems you want to go into labor on your own?
  • Yeah... by all means, I'm not going to request and induction but will go with the dr's suggestions... They're worried about Weston being big and I don't want to take any chances... at one time he thought that his shoulders may not fit down the birth canal and mentioned scheduling a C/S w/o trying to have him vaginally... I'm trying to steer clear of that situation if at all possible.

I know that the u/s doesn't always show the correct measurements... and would like to think that they're wrong...

DH weighed 9.5lbs and I weighed 8.5... so I feel that I'm almost destined to have a big/healthy baby...

    Thanks for responding though...

Hope things are well for you today!

  • A friend of mine who I was a birth coach for did have her membranes stripped and it didn't help her and it was also pretty painful.
  • I had my membranes stripped on Monday at my 38 week appt. The actually process wasn't that painful just uncomfortable due to the fact that my little guy is still really high so the doc had to reach in a long ways. The after effects have been awful, ever since monday I have been cramping and contracting on and off. They aren't timeable yet and seem to vary from really strong hard contractions that I have to focus and breath through to really mild barely notice them. So if you are hoping to avoid an induction I would give it a try but it might not work if your body isn't ready. Good luck!
