anyone having issues getting prenatals?

long story/rant

I was on Natalcare Plus, which was part of the recall and now back-ordered. The pharmacy tried to get me alternative to refill my presription. They called and left a message saying that the alternative wasn't covered by my insurance and it could cost $80. When I called back, they mentioned that they think they found another alternative that would be covered and that would call me back to let me know it's all set. Well, I never got a call back so I just assumed everything is all set. Since I had enough pills last about a week, I waited to go to the pharmacy to pick up the new prescription this past Sat. I was handed over the $80 prescription. I mentioned the phone conversation I had and the girl just shrugged and said that there was not another alternative. Frustrated, I left the store, ranted at my DH when I got home about how our insurance sucks. He called the pharmacy that he uses which is a small, family business and they very politely told him to have me call the doctor to call in the prescription to them. So yesterday, I went to the new pharmacy and again my insurance didn't cover it and the brand that usually have was not in stock. They called the pharmacy down the road and it was the same deal. Apparently, the manufacturer has decided to stop making this brand. So now the pharmacy is trying to work with my dr. to get an alternative that is covered by my insurance.

Am I only one who is having issues in trying to get prescription pre-natals? Or is it just my insurance sucks? I am so frustrated in just trying to get some stupid vitamins. I don't have a lot of privacy at work, so I basically have to go out in the cold to make all these phone calls. It's so much fun.

  • Why don't you go get OTC vitamins?  They're the same thing.

I heart the One-A-Day prenatals with DHA supplement.  And they're cheaper than scrip vitamins.

  • I take the One-A-Day vitamins as well.  I think they are just fine.  Except for "fishy burps" about 1/2 hr after taking the DHA supplement.  YUCK.
  • Yep, another Yes for one a day prenatals

Ditto all that. Though I like the Target Brand and also take extra folic acid w/DHA.  A lot less than $80 dollars.

OMG yes.  I have since remedied that by taking them about 40 minutes before bed.  Haven't had any fishyburps since then.

  • I am having a similar issue.  My doctor said I could finish off the OTC pills I was using when I was TTC. But really wants me to have the prescription now because the OTC only has the "minimum requirements".  Well the prescription he gave me was for a new vitamin that just came out and is not covered by my insurance yet.  But I decided to fill it anyway and bite the bullett.  The Pharmacy said "we dont carry that, we will have to order it and it will be in on Monday".  Then Monday they called me and said that the supplier delivered the wrong one.  I am hoping it will be in today, since I just ran out of the other kind I was taking from GNC.

  • I did have to wait a few days because my pharmacy didn't have my PNV in stock but I took the OTC ones in the meantime.  My doctor really wanted me on the prescription ones (due to MTHFR)

  • Sorry you're going through this but you could ask your Dr. about OTC PNV or just take the $80 PNV.  I had a similar problem and am paying $50 for mine.  hopefully it works out for you.
  • I took CVS-brand OTC ones my whole first pg, and when I got my BFP this time I just started taking them again.  Both (two different) OBs said they were fine and there was no need for me to take prescription ones.

  • Target brand Prenatal Pills with Folic Acid is what was recommended by many to me : )

  • I've been taking Naturemade I got in the big bottle from Costco.  My OB and RE said they were fine.
  • My OB gave me a Rx, but told me OTC was fine.  They left it up to me to decide if I wanted to pay more for a Rx.
  • Problem solved. My pharmacy was able to get a prescription at $16 for a 60 day supply.

Thanks for the responses. I thought I was the only one going insane :-)

I'll ask the dr. about OTC's on my next visit to the doc.

  • Do you have a Meijer store in your area?  They have a free Rx prenatal program.  I knew nothing about it, but my OB/G told me about it and offered an Rx - no insurance necessary.  Turns out the vits are really hard on my stomach, but it might be something worth checking into anyway.
  • I feel your pain. My doctor's office called in my prescription to the pharmacy on Friday. The pharmacy called me back and said that they would have to order that type of prenatal because they didn't have it in stock. It came in yesterday. I had a $10 coupon (good for 10 uses) and my insurance... the cost was still $30 a month. Surely the OTC ones are almost as good.... and for $30.... just think if I could save that...??
