2 weeks off after baby is born need help

I work for a small hotel only 3 ppl wrok in my dept so I cover there day's off I work 4 days a week. There is another girl that fills in once in awhile also when needed but she has a 9 mon old son. My assit GM (Woman) still thinks in her head I'm going to only take two weeks off. I was planning on ONLY taking 4 weeks, since DH was out of work from sept-Feb and we had to use alot of our saving to live which was meant for when I had the baby. Well I'm going to talk to my GM (man) when it time about my 4 weeks.

When should I talk to him?

I don't want to lose my job we life in FL and the laws are different sinmce there are less than 50 empl, no FMLA apply's.

What would you do?

Can your doctor write you a note that you need to be out a certain amount of time for recovery?

I would probably talk to him soon about it so it's not a surprise or anything.

I also work for a small company so no FMLA applies  and in FL, I was also offered 2 weeks off, I took it. I was also offered to be able to bring the baby to work up to a year.  Maybe you could ask your boss to be able to bring the baby for a time too, to let you ease back into work?

Sooner is better than later, and talk to your doctor first so you have your "doctor's instructions" to mention to the GM.

Your doctor honestly may not allow you to return to work after only 2 weeks.  Maternity leave isn't for you to have fun playing with your new baby (at least it's not for the first few weeks).  It's for your body to recover from the huge trauma it had to go through when you had a baby.  I can't imagine going back after only 2 weeks.  I'd talk to your doctor asap.  And your employer needs to be reasonable -- do you have vacation time you can take?

2 weeks doesn't seem like much time to heal after a birth, and thats assuming its a vaginal birth. If for some reason you needed a c-section there is no way you could go back to work in 2 weeks. I would talk to your boss about those possibilities.

It is so insane to think that someone would expect you to be back after 2 weeks.  What if you have a c-section???!!!  Even 4 weeks sounds unbearable.  I would talk with your doctor, have them write a "recommendation of time needed to recover", then take that as ammo when you discuss this with your employer.

I agree with pp. 2 weeks is such a short amount of time to heal after having a baby.  If I were you I would go to the doctor, get something hand written by him or her... and take that with you when you meet with the GM.  This is your health and your baby.. I'd fight for it.

I can't really fathom only taking 4 weeks off, let alone 2.   It is so unreasonable to expect a woman to return to full work duties only 2 weeks after giving birth.  You may barely be able to sit straight by then!   Hopefully, you'll be able to get a dr.'s note.  Being from Canada and the norm 12 months (depending on situations, but usually 55% paid wage/salary and sometimes less time....), it always shocks me to be reading that employers expect their employees back to work after such a short time!

If all else fails, I'd say do a little bit of research about what is actually going on in your body two-weeks post partum and if he is being completely inflexible, share the details with him. He might see things a little differently.

Two weeks is not enough time for your body to heal.  I had an uncomplicated vaginal birth but at 2 weeks, I was still having problems sitting in one position for very long.  If you have any tearing or an episiotomy, the stitches alone will make it hard to do your regular duties.  Most doctors will not let you go back to work that early and if they do, it is usually only for very limited hours.
