Question . . Perhaps flameful

Have your children ever fallen of of the couch, bed, changing table? My 16 month old fell off the couch tonight. He cried briefly, I consoled him, and then he went to bed. My mother has me convinced I need to call the Dr. about a possible concusion (?) . . . Do I really need to worry? What are the signs? I obviously watcher him closely, but they always tend to get in trouble when you briefly turn your head.

Re: Question . . Perhaps flameful

  • this is so not flameful. We cannot watch our kids 24 hours a day. My baby fell off a bed once and it sucked.

That said, you want to look for unusual behavior, vomiting, etc. Sleepiness after a fall IS common, so don't worry too much about that. My pedi said to wake DS once, at night, all the way to waking. If he gets to waking ok, then he is ok. Trust your instincts, most of all. A call could not hurt, just to review what to look for.

  • My son fell off the changing table when he was about 1 on a hard wood floor.  he screamed and his lip bleed. But I kept and eye on him and he was fine.  I too thought I should call the dr for a concussion.  Since then DS has fallen off our bed a few times and its pretty high but that was on carpet and off the couch.

Cant hurt to call the dr for piece of mind but kids are rezilient (sp)

  • Uh - DS has fallen off of many things. Multiple times. He once fell down almost an entire flight of hardwood stairs (and he only started crying when I wouldn't let him back on them).

Once we were worried about a concussion - he fell off the couch and hit his head on the corner of the coffee table. The pedi said unless it was an extremely hard hit, his pupils were fixed, he vomited, had difficulty waking, etc. that he was fine. Kids fall off couches a lot. If he is acting normally and was easily consoled, he is fine.

If you are really nervous try waking him up 30 minutes to an hour after he falls asleep. But I am sure he is fine.

  • yep.  she fell of the sofa at 1 month while DH and I sat on either side of her dumb founded.  If there is a dent, take her to the ER, if there is a lump, then watch her, if it is just a red mark or small bruise, no problem.

    Dents are really bad.
  • Oh, he's fine:) I can't tell you how many times my kids have fallen off the couch, chairs, bed, etc. (I know this makes me sound like a bad mom, but really, this DOES tend to happen if you turn your head for a split second, which is unavoidable) Anyhow, my pediatrician told me unless the baby falls more than 3 feet off the ground and directly onto his head, he should be fine. Just look for signs that he may be harmed...sluggish behavior, sleeping and not waking up, etc.
  • That's what I thought. My mother has a way of making me nervous.
  • My DS fell off a little kid chair in my classroom earlier this year and whacked his head.  The pedi said just watch for vomiting, and strange behavior.  He's also fallen off the bed once-he's learning how to do summersaults (sp?) and doesn't understand that the bed is not a great place to practice!
  • He not fallen off of any of what you mentioned, but he did fall the down the stairs (TWICE). I did not call the doctor either time.
  • DD hasn't but I rolled of the changing table when I was an infant and ended up with a depressed skull fracture.  My parents took me to the hospital and were drilled about what happened (looking for abuse).  It was an honest accident..I have pics from me in the hospital with bandages all over my head.  Not fun, but sometimes accidents happen!
  • My DS fell off the bed onto a tile floor head first when he was 9 months. He started throwing up later and I thought he was going to die! Turns out he was just sick and had another ear infection. The ER dr wasn't concerned about the falling off the bed. Look for vomiting, glazed over eyes, sunken soft spot, etc. He'll be alright.
