At the risk of getting flamed...

This morning I decided to give my bathroom a good scrub. I mopped the floors, scrubbed my tub and cleaned all of the mirrors. As I was on all fours, scrubbing the bathtub, I thought to myself 'surely, the fumes and straining can't be good for the baby'. I was using numerous cleaning products , plus I was using a good amount of muscle to get all of the nasty soap scum. Now, of course, I'm all worried about the possibility of hurting the baby. No, I don't have any cramps or bleeding, just a crazy mindset that I have to be with my feet propped up for the next 9 months.

At the risk of getting flamed, I'm fine, right? Crazy, but fine?

  • Yup, crazy but fine! I scrubbed my house top to bottom around 5 weeks and everything turned out fine.

  • Well, there is nothing you can do about it now, and I am sure ONE day of scrubbing won't do much damage but you should look into the chemicals in cleaning products and make your own decisions. I have switched to all natural products, cheaper and safer.?
  • I'm sure your fine, however harsh chemicals are not good for you or your baby. How about investing in some natural cleaners ... ?at least while you are PG?
  • As long as you didn't mix bleach and ammonia or an ammonia containing product...or drink them.

  • Just don't drink the bleach, mmkay?
  • i'm calling child protective services on you.  Devil

seriously though, you could claim it hurts the baby and get your SO to do it.  Big Smile

  • As long as you didn't snort the soft scrub, or take shots of bleach you are fine.  Surprise

  • As long as you're careful with the cleaners you use (you know, don't let yourself get sick from the fumes, and don't drink anything or throw the cleaners in your eyes), I think you'll be fine. You're pregnant, that doesn't mean you're invalid. I can't wait to feel a little bit better so I can clean the heck out of my house.

Ditto!!!!  My house is a pig sty.

  • Most cleaning supplys aren't too harmful to you or your baby, as far as the grunting and elbo greese I would worry more about the sore muscles. :)
  • Whoa! I was not expecting all of the quick responses! Just goes to show that I'm not the only one worrying all the time.Stick out tongue

As a woman who dealt with IF, it's very hard to be calm and not second guess everything I'm doing. I guess I need to find a better excuse to not being able to clean the house, ha ha. Anyway, thank you for humoring me, ladies. I figured it was fine but I just needed some reassurance.

    PS

I'm definitely going to start getting more green products. The extra $ would be worth the peace of mind.

  • My ob/gyn told me to have DH do the cleaning with chemicals especially in areas that aren't well ventilated.  He said if you don't have to touch them, then why should you?  He also said not to deal with anything aerosol.  I did get some natural cleaning products so I can do some things otherwise I'd feel like a lazy a$$.

  • Try to keep wherever you are scrubbing properly ventilated to prevent inhaling the fumes.  It isn't good for you pregnant or not.
  • I wouldn't be worried so much about the intensity of your cleaning, but if you were using conventional cleaning products, yes, I'd be worried too.

What all-natural products have you found to be cheaper?  I want!

I'm thinking she's referring to mixing baking soda and vinegar or something. I was thinking more along the lines of buying those 'green' products.

  • I have a few of more expensive green products- I like Method laundry soap and hand soap- but I am doing the vinegar and baking soda thing and I LOVE it. Seriously, it cleans SO well and I got a HUGE jug of white vinegar at Costco for about $3. It works so great on the wood floors, granite counters, the bathroom and makes everything smell really fresh- not scented, just totally clean. I really recommend it.?

The chemicals in cleaners are actually really creepy. There won't be any immediate effects on your baby so you guys can joke about not drinking the products, ect. but there is some scary stuff linking the chemicals to cancer. Just do your research, everything we are sold isn't safe. OK, I am done. :) ??

  • You should be fine.  I know what you mean though, I bleached the tub grout this weekend and found myself holding my breath until I left the bathroom. lol
