help: takng 2 kids to the grocery store

So I absolutely need to get out of the house today if at all possible. My only escape is the grocery store but I have no idea how I am going to manage this.

DD#1 loves to ride in the front of the cart and I feel that she is the most safe there and will not be running around pulling things off the shelves if I let her walk through the store instead of ride.

But then my question is what to do with DD#2, who will be in her infant carrier. I do have a sling but I haven't tried it out yet and am not confident in using it yet plus I don't want to have to fiddle with it in this cold weather; I'd rather keep her warm in her carrier. So do I try to put her in the main part of the cart? Our store does not have any of the larger carts for kids so I'm stuck with the regular store carts. I just don't see how I'm going to fit all my groceries in the cart with the carseat in there! Help!

  • Try the sling at home first and get it positioned correctly so you dont' have to fiddle with it. I used the baby bjorn which worked really well for us. If she doesn't like the sling, try a carrier. She'll also be against you which will help keep her wam, and your hands free.

  • I put DS in the child seat and usually sling DD. If I use the carrier, I put it sideways across the narrowest part of the cart. It clips to the wire of the frame that way. I can then shove groceries under the carrier.

I prefer the sling, though. She is warmer up against my body that she is in an infant seat.  Try it out at home.

  • Are there any other stores around that would have a suitable trolley with seats for both of your kids?

Nope :( This is the only store that's less than 40 miles away.

Maybe I'll give the sling a try this morning.

  • I STILL am having issues with this!

    1) Get groceries delivered

    2) Go to Costco- they have bigger carts

    3) I don't like grocery shopping with the sling either. I don't feel like I can bend down or up to get groceries easily. Plus, I don't feel like I am able to properly watch DD#1 if I need to pick her up or whatever.  Put the baby in the carrier in the cart, and just get as few things as possible, then send your H out for a bigger trip later.

    4) Will DD#1 push one of those kiddie carts around? Assuming she won't run off, LOL

    Good luck!

  • When DS was in the infant carrier, I put him in the carrier in the cart.  The groceries went around him in any pocket I could find and underneath too.  I never could get a giant load with both kids but I could get basics to get me through for awhile.  DD rode up front.  I never used a sling.

Now DS rides up front and DD sits in the basket itself.  If it gets too full, then I let her out to walk.

It's a challenge the first couple of times, but it gets easier as you figure out what works best for you.  Good luck!

  • why dont you test your sling out around the house for a while to see if you are comfortable with it...???
  • I used to just fit as many groceries as I could around the infant seat, then put some on the shelf under the basket part. ?I was terrible about planning meals in advance, so I was usually just getting a couple of days worth of groceries anyway.
