Cradle cap behind the ears?

I noticed today that my daughter has some really nasty yellow scales behind her ears, hidden in this fold of skin.  It looks like bad cradle cap.  I got rid of most of it but ewww, I didn't know that could happen on their ears.  Anyone else's baby have that or is mine just half lizard?

Re: Cradle cap behind the ears?

  • mine has it in her eyebrows and between. It's gross.

  • Actually, the pedi told me they could get it in their diaper too and I would have freaked if I saw that.
  • Mine had it behind 1 ear - the pedi pointed it out a couple weeks ago.  He recommended we use dandruff shampoo on the cradle cap, behind the ears too.   It's all clear now - after just a couple times a week for 2 weeks.  : )
  • At Andrew's 4 mo appt, the pedi said cradle cap can show up behind the ears too.  Andrew's isn't behind the ears but geez, his head definitely looks half lizard.

  • I think the babies do this stuff on purpose, to gross us out and give us something else to worry about.

I'm just glad I noticed it before my MIL did Wink

  • I just took a q-tip and scraped it off from behind both of my DD ears tonight.  I will have to pick up some dandruff shampoo next time I am at the store.

  • Oh yeah, mine gets that too.  I was so grossed out, and felt bad - clearly I'm doing a terrible job cleaning my poor kids head!  =)  Luckily it came off pretty easily though.

  • yea mine did.  I gently scraped it off and knock on wood, none since.  I did not use dandruff shampoo.  I know ppl do but I think it is too burny/harsh.  I just loosened with repeated brishing with a soft bristle brush till they were loose enough to brush off then later on gave DS a good shampoo.
  • We have that too. ?I thought it was dirt at first and really disappointed in myself for not cleaning DS well. ?It has since cleared up but we're still working on the scalp. ?Hopefully it will go away soon - I've tried everything!
  • DS had this too. I lathered his head up really well then gently rubbed his head with a soft brush and took a wash cloth behind his ears. After a couple times it hasn't come back, but he has it on his eye brows and between now

  • I hope you all don't mind but I was bored and lurking from 2nd Tri...I'm a PA (physician assistant) in pediatric dermatology...what she has is called 'seborrheic dermatitis' and is very common (aka cradle cap). Babies commonly get it on the scalp, behind the ears, eyebrows, sides of the nose, neck, skin folds, and diaper area. It's just overactive sebacceous glands. You can use OTC 1% hydrocortisone twice a day for about 2 weeks and it should go away. OTC dandruff shampoos also work, but we don't recommend them in infants. Hope this helps!

  • i noticed the exact same thing about a week ago...cleaned it all off and now just make an effort to run the wash clothes back there and even use a tiny bit of mineral oil to make sure I am keeping it from happening again. not that is really matters, but my daughter is about a week younger than yours.
