so does switching to whole milk cause diarrhea?

I posted a long and rambling post about DS on 12-24 months, but thought you guys might have more experience.  DS has been on whole milk for about 10 days and developed pretty bad diarrhea and now diaper rash.

I am course freaked out that hey may have a milk allergy or something..

But I have been giving him like 32 ounces a milk a day because I didn't realize you were supposed to give only 24 ounces..My pedi just said to switch over, and didn't say stop giving him so much..DUH my stupidity! So I'm thinking that maybe that's why he's got diarrhea..

But on the other hand his chin gets red and irritated if milk drips on it (didn't with formula) But he is fine with yogurt and cheese..

He gets tons of ear infections, and my sister in law has severe milk intolerance....(could be a milk allergry??)

Ok so of course I'm going to take him to the pedi probably switch back over to formula, and gradually reintroduce 20 or so ounces a day and see what happens, but just looking to hear others experiences and see if anything similar happened and how it turned out.

Thanks :)

  • you could try soy although if they have a milk intolerance they might have issues with soy, too.  DS can only drink rice milk.  they really don't need milk anyway.  just the fat and calcium which you can get from other sources.  I would stop giving him milk immediately and let his little gut heal.

  • DD initially had trouble with milk-diarrhea and vomiting.  So we questioned if it was the lactose bothering her.  So we switched to Lactaid for about 6 mos and then reintroduced reg milk and she hasn't had any problems.  I think she was just having problems digesting it and the Lactaid was little easier to digest at first.

  • Our pedi had us do a gradual switch for this very reason.  We did half BM/half whole milk for a month or so.  I also noticed that she would have diarrhea if I had to give her 2% or 1% for some reason.  So, we did a sort of gradual transition to 2% milk when the time came.  I hope it's not a milk allergy!
