So, DS woke up extra early this morning it is apparent he has pink eye.  I have arithromycin ointment left over from last time he had it (in November, I think).  It's not expired or anything, but is has been used.  Would you go ahead and use it, or call/take him to the pedi?

Also, assuming you used the ointment you already had on hand, would you cancel a playdate/dinner with friends (my friends and their children who are the same age as DS).  Last time he had it daycare said he could return after one dose of meds.  So that would lead me to believe he would no longer be contagious.  But I'm not too sure about that.

Take him to pedi. ?It may be viral, which would mean you don't need antibiotics.

My DS has had that several times and the Pedi gave extra drops so we didn't have to keep going back.  I would give it a try, unless it looks worse than last time.

I would cancel the playdate. I was told 24 hrs after the first dose of antibiotics.

I just got over pink eye myself..and the child/person is still considered contageous (sp??) until the eye is no longer crusty/gooing up..If your dc rubs their eye which I'm sure they will and then touches toys or whatever then  there is a good chance the other kid will get it too..It stinks having pink eye, but I would rather play it safe..

The rule is that typically after being medicated for 24 hours, they aren't contageous.  Once the meds go in, that crustiness pretty much stops.  Pink eye has been through my house several times since DS was born (gotta love daycare!) so we're pretty well versed in the pink eye area. lol  If you have the meds on hand, I'd use them.  Since this would be his first dose, I would cancel the playdate, though.  You need 24 hours and a few doses to make sure the medicine is fighting the pink eye.
