A CSA is an idea I'm toying with... how much food do you get from yours? How far does it go? One of our local CSAs says a full share is "7-11 items" per week. Anyone able to clue me in? I'm feeling a bit lost!
We also split with another couple. Even half was plenty of food for us for the week, sometimes we couldn't finish it!
It also depends on what is in season...sometimes the box would be really exciting and yummy and others it would be fairly boring. It sure made a difference in our grocery bill for the summer!
If you are torn with doing a CSA, I really highly recommend it. The food is so fresh and it's kind of fun to see what you get every week. Plus, it's always a good feeling to support local farmers
Ours is $450 a share for approx. a 20 week growing season, so June to early October. It says that the beginning of the season is equal to about half of a grocery bag, but at the peak of the season it be as much as two full grocery bags or more! It also says it's either enough to feed one vegitarian for a week, or two non-vegitarians. They also give a few things to us live, like herbs and cherry tomoato plants at the beginning of the growing season to plant at our own house. We are planning on splitting this share with my parents and also starting a very very small raised bed garden in our backyard. We're going to testout which one we like best, he CSA or growing ourselves. (And there is a very good chance our garden idea will not work because I have no green thumb what-so-ever!)
We have a half share...it is just meat. We pick up once per month and get a dozen eggs and a large grocery bag full of meat. It probably would not last a month if you ate at home every night. We eat with family and at resturants sometimes and supplement a lot of non-meat dishes to make it stretch. It is still a good deal though - about $600 annually. Right now we get chicken, beef, pork and lamb. I think next year I am just going to get a side of beef and a pig.....I don't like cooking whole chickens and I don't like the lamb.
Thanks ladies... it's good to know that a half share would be plenty for now. I just need to convince DH, and see what my parents are planning to plant in their garden this year- they always have lots of tomatoes, so I need to figure out how much I can really eat in terms of veggies.
