Kids and nutrtion. Do you figure out all of the food group %'s or just feed them

Personally I just feed my kids a healthy diet. I couldn't tell you how much protein they get or how many Oz of milk they have in a day. I just feed them.

Anyone else?

  • Same.  DD is a great eater, so I don't worry about it.  I suppose that maybe if I had a child who was super picky, I would be a little more aware of actual quantities of food.
  • I think <1% of people actually take the time to figure out all of  the appropriate perecentages daily for their child(ren).

We have a lot of fruit and milk in the house and they get their veggies with dinner. That's as far as I personally take it. They actually it a really well balanced diet IMO.

  • When Sydney wasn't gaining weight I was more concerned with everything.  But I found that once I relaxed and just offered healthy options, she began eating just fine and gaining weight too.

Both of our girls eat well, so that's another reason that I don't worry.

  • Not really. I mean I don't measure it out or anything. I'm fortunate to have a toddler that is not a picky eater (the only thing he won't eat is steak), but I do make sure he gets fruit at least once a day (sometimes twice), protein twice a day, veggies twice, dairy  and some grains/oats/carbs. Just your normal breakfast, lunch and dinner.
  • I haven't the foggiest idea.

OK, I know generally that he hasn't eaten anything but fruit and trail mix bars or something like that, but no way do I calculate it meal by meal.

  • Both of my kids eat a ton of fruits & veggies. I try to limit unhealthy food & feed them lean proteins & good carbs. But, I do have a super picky eater that would only eat macaroni & cheese & chicken nuggets if I let him. I do try to pay attention to his sodium/fat intake so he's getting a more balanced diet. It helps that the daycare they go to does do all of the nutritional planning. . .
  • No, not realy- I just feed them. I do generally know what they've eaten recently so that I can try to balance it out a bit (ie: not give dd a banana for 3 meals in a row, to know that if ds had juice for breakfast that he gets milk or water the next time, etc.) and I try to give them a varied, balanced diet- but I don't measure it out, carefully track it or anything like that.?
  • I just feed him. I feed him lots of different things but like you I don't keep track of ounces and %'s at all.
  • I just try to feed DD as many food groups with each meal as possible. She eats healthy and isn't picky. I don't obsess, but I've become very aware because she lost weight for a while, plus DH has recently been diagnosed as a diabetic, so I'm conscious of all food.

  • No :) And I am a registered dietitian :) It is too hard to figure anyway. I just give her the most balanced diet I can. It is easier to count up food servings from each food group- to make sure they are getting enough fruits, veggies, protein, and milk.

I bet you are doing great!

  • I just feed him.  Some weeks I'm sure he gets more fruit than veggies, other weeks more veggies than fruit.  Every week i'm sure he gets to much dairy but we really like cheese around here.  I just try to generally feed him over the course of say a week a well rounded amount.

  • No. I just feed Jack a healthy diet with a good variety of protein, healthy carbs and whole grains, fruits and vegetables. I watch his sugar and sodium intake as well. He rarely drinks juice so that's not an issue in our house. I try to stay away from anything that comes from a box. I give when it comes to Amy's frozen mac & cheese. He would eat it at every meal if I let him.
  • I try to give them items that I know are healthy and then let them chose how much of it they want to eat.  I can't count how much fat vs. protein vs. fiber I eat a day, I surely can't keep track of my kids.
