when can you switch to generic formula?

My babies are almost 3 weeks old and we are supplementing with Emphamil formula.  When can you switch to generic?   Anyone have any issues with switching?

Re: when can you switch to generic formula?

  • I'm not an expert, but I don't think it matters.  When I told our pedi we switched to Walgreen's Soy from Similac Isomyl Advance, she said no big deal, it's way cheaper and exactly the same.

And I like the fact that it does not foam AT ALL.

We were using RTF and spending around $300/month, now we're only spending $80.

You'll notice any changes in gas, tummy aches, etc if it doesn't agree with them.....a while ago we tried Kirkland brand and not only did the babies not like it, they were VERY gassy.

  • anytime.  you can use generic from day 1.  It is the same ingredients as name brand formula, just without the name brand packaging and marketing.

  • It doesn't matter...all formulas are the same and go through the same FDA regulations. You can start them on generic if you want.

No issues with switching here. We switched at 4 weeks and the girls didn't even notice.

  • Once the boys were off the neosure, we went back and forth b/n similac (what we got for free), and Costco Kirkland brand - probably around 3 weeks old.  They did fine with the switch.
  • we switched back and forth between Enfamil and the Target version of Enfamil all the time (b/c sometimes we'd get free enfamil samples... but normally used the Target version) and DS never had issues.

if you are using an equivalent generic- there should not be a problem. The Target generics are quite good- and actually had less bubbles than the real deal.
