Is a bundle me safe?

I was told by the guy that installed my carseat (Safekids of Maryland) that a bundle me or a blanket is the only safe thing to use with an infant car seat because it doesn't interfere with the baby and the padding and seatbelt like a big coat.

Well a friend was told that a bundle me isn't safe and to just use a blanket.

Who was told the right information?

  • The bundle me has holes for the straps on the seat to go through, so I think they're fine. I have one for my baby.

  • My mom bought me one similar but it is just a cover with elastic around it. It doesnt even touch the seat part or the carseat. Then it has and flap that velcro so you can see the baby. I dont know the brand but i cant imagine it being unsafe since it is pretty much a blanket with elastic.
  • Technically you are not supposed to use a bundle me because there should be as little as possible between your baby and the carseat.  However, many people use them and their babies are just fine.  The reason they say they aren't safe is because they haven't been crash tested with all the different types of seats. My pedi's office said not to use them, and to get the cover that just goes over the top of the seat instead.

Yep, I've always heard nothing between the baby and the back of the carseat.  DH and I went to a carseat safety class done by the CA highway patrol and this is what they said.

Also, the only thing they would let you put under the seat to protect your carseat was that shelf liner stuff that you get to protect your glasswear.  They said a lot of the aftermarket mats intended for this purpose actually reduce friction of the carseat against your car seat which is bad as you don't want the carseat to move around.
