TWIN MOMS: Empty Sac?

Question to you Moms of twins..

Have any of you had an ultrasound with 2 sac, one empty.. one with a viable heartbeat?

I went today for my 1st U/S. The one sac was empty.. the other had a strong heartbeat. The U/S tech (who was prob one of the nicest women I have ever met) showed me the 2 sacs.. She zoomed and only gave me an ultrasound of the sac with the heartbeat. She never said anything about me miscarrying. She just asked if I had bleeding and cramping, almost as if she KNEW I did.. when I havent. I have been fine as a matter of fact. She told me my Dr will let me know and give me the scoop on what happens next.

Did any of you go through this to find that later on, one registered..? Ppl keep telling me its possible and I am NOT ONE to hold on to false hopes but I was just curious for my own mindset. At this pt. I have come to sad terms that I have lost one, but thankfully have another fighter, going strong. Its a bitter sweet moment, no doubt.

Just wondering. Thanks.. Huh?

Re: TWIN MOMS: Empty Sac?

  • I'm so sorry.  With my twins, I had an u/s at 6 weeks and there was only 1 sac and no fetal pole or anything.  2 weeks later, there were 2 sacs, 2 heartbeats...

When I had a miscarriage, I bled for a week before passing the fetus.

Good luck- keep hope- that baby is okay until they can prove to you that it's not.

  • I did have that happen to me, so it is possible.  At my 6 wk u/s we saw 2 sacs but only 1 heartbeat and fetal pole. The 2nd sac was much smaller and looked empty.  Same thing at our 7 wk u/s.  A few days later I had some spotting and assumed I was losing the 2nd sac  - went in for a quick u/s to make sure Baby A was still okay and suddenly there was Baby B catching up in size and with a beautiful strong heartbeat.

It is very early and surprises can happen - but there's also no guarantee.  It is so hard waiting to see what happens and knowing it's out of your control.  Try to focus on the happiness of that one healthy little bean and take things one day at a time until your next u/s.

  • I went through the same thing with my last pg (at the exact same time as lilsurfergirl, actually. I think our u/s were days apart). At 7 weeks I had one baby with a strong heartbeat and one sac with something in it, but no heartbeat. They couldn't tell if the second baby was behind in forming or had stopped forming. We did end up having a vanishing twin. I felt the same thing you were feeling. It was very hard to grieve one baby while celebrating the other. I hope your little one catches up by your next u/s. If you do have a vanishing twin then just remember that it is important to let yourself grieve. It may be a long process for you and you should take all the time you need and don't let others rush you. People were quick with their judgements about how they just couldn't understand how I could be upset when I had wanted a baby for so long and finally was going to have one. But they have no idea what they would do if they were in those shoes. Like I said, hopefully things will be fine! The embryos can implant at different times and one twin can definitely just be a little bit behind. But definitely remember to take care of yourself regardless of what happens.

  • At 6w4d we had two sacs, but one was noticebly bigger than other and had a strong heartbeat, while the other appeared almost empty. The doctor told us it was probably a case of vanishing twin. She had us come back a week later to check on it and there were two heartbeats! To this day, baby B measures a few days behind her sister.

Good luck - I know how hard it is to wait not knowing what is happening.
