2nd Trimester

anyone still using low-dose (baby) aspirin?

I have been on low-dose baby aspirin since O to promote blood flow to the fetus and prevent clotting.  I take one a day most days.  My dr said there is nothing wrong with continuing to use it until the 3rd tri (when you want the clotting ability for delivery) and it could still be beneficial now, but I am thinking of stopping because I saw on the safe fetus list that it may cause issues with the baby (granted that was in high dosages but still...).  Is anyone else using baby aspirin or if you did before when did you stop?

  • I was on baby asprin but I was taken off of it to be put on lovenox.  Originally my OB said to take it through the 6th month.

  • I'm still on it.  As far as I'm concerned, after a miscarriage, a blood clot is a terrifying possibility.  According to my doctor, there's no reason to stop until later on in 3rd tri.  I'll continue it until then.

  • I hadn't heard about the baby aspirin thing (in terms of improving blood flow to the baby), but I can see the logic.  I would say it probably won't make a huge difference either way.  But, definitely stop before third tri.  I've operated on people on aspirin, vitamin E, mega doses of fish oil, etc. and they bleed like you wouldn't believe.

BTW, you're pic is giving me bump envy!  I'm only three days behind you and all I have is what appears to be a beer gut.  You look so cute!

  • I am still taking it under doctor's supervision. I think for me, the benefits outweigh the risks.

I haven't operated on anyone, but I have to say that I bleed A LOT more than I did before asprin/lovenox...

And question have you given any of these patients an epideral?

  • I don't do epidurals, but I know that anesthesiologists get very nervous about doing them on patients on full dose aspirin and will flat out refuse if you haven't stopped your lovenox for at least 12-24 hours.  You might want to talk to your OB about that.  I'm not sure how they handle that situation.  Let me know what you find out, I'm curious!
  • I am. I'm supposed to take it until a month or so before my EDD
  • I'm on it due to a clotting disorder and will stay on it until shortly before the birth.

Your u/s pic is too cute!  Thanks for the info and the sweet compliment.  My belly popped out around 10 weeks and I'm still getting used to it.  But we'll both be giant before we know it and longing for those comfortable days again.  :)

  • My OB had me stop taking baby asprin at 20 weeks.
  • I am still taking it but I will probably have to stop towards the end of the pregnancy.  The Drs (I have three- OB, Perinatologist and Rheumatologist telling me to take it) have not mentioned exactly when to stop.

I am at risk for m/c(or stillbirth now) and IUGR. I'll take whatever can help my baby.
