Is this bad?

When I put DD to bed each night, she likes to lay in her crib and hold her bottle.  She'll finish the bottle and go to sleep and then I take it out and some of the time she's good til morning.  But is this bad?  Should I feed her the bottle and then put her down?  Just based on how she acts, she'd rather lay there and do it herself otherwise if you hold her and feed her she's squirmy and fussy...  I just hate to keep up the bad habits... Oh, and she's almost 7 months old.

  • It's not a habit that you should get in to. Not only is it a bad habit, but it's bad for her teeth. My DD has a cup of water on her nightstand but I would never let her have milk/formula/juice in bed.

  • Is there milk in it? That is not great for two reasons - if she has any teeth she is bathing them in sugar from the milk and having it sit there all night (I think there is an actual term "bottle rot" for it). Also, drinking while lying down makes them more prone to ear infections.

I would try to break the habit.

  • It is a bad habit to get into.  It will be harder for her to give up the bottle and go to sleep on her own.  Hopefully there is only water in her bottle.  Formula or juice has been shown to rot their teeth and even cause problems when they get their permanent teeth.  My DC's got a bottle or breastfed before bed but they always, always had a sip of water before going into the crib.  Usually that is all they would take.  Once they were a year old (no longer breastfed) we would brush teeth before bed, right after bath.
