2nd Trimester

no heartbeat at 12 weeks.

One of my girlfriends is 12 weeks pregnant but they are unable to find the heartbeat.  She has had no bleeding or cramping but her doctor wants her to have a D&C in the next few days.  I do not want to give her false hope but I clearly remember girls on the bump going through the same thing with their doctors but not having the D&C and later the doctor had found the heartbeat.  Can anyone pass on any advice if they went through this.  She is really torn but I think that she wants to wait it out and I think she should too.

Re: no heartbeat at 12 weeks.

  • I'm assuming they can't find it with a doppler? Can they do an U/S? I would demand an U/S before going through with anything.

  • they should have done an u/s to confirm. they would not tell her to do a d&c unless they had.

did she mention if they did one?

  • Did she have an ultrasound?  I would tell her to not the the D & C unless she's had an ultrasound.  I have a tilted uterus and they couldn't find the heartbeat on doppler at 12 weeks either.
  • Were they trying to find the heartbeat with the doppler or with ultrasound? Because it is still somewhat to early to hear with doppler. I would tell my friend to ask her doctor for an ultrasound for peace of mind.

  • I'm so sorry about your friend, I can just imagine how heartbroken she must feel. I would do the same, I'd just wait. Has she had an ultrasound? My thoughts are with her.
  • They had trouble finding the hb with us at 14 weeks even though we had heard it at 10.  So they did an ultrasound and everything was fine, and then listen again with the dopplar and found it.  I guess my question is the same as everyone elses'-did they do an ultrasound?

Ditto. Unless her doc said she's to early...is her placenta anterior? Or, is she *bigger*? That all factors in to hearing it early via doppler...

    Ditto.

  • I had a missed miscarriage and found out at my 12w appt.  They couldn't find the hb on the doppler and took me in to get a u/s right away.  There was no denying it on the u/s, my baby had stopped growing at 8weeks, but I had had NO symptoms of a m/c AT ALL.  No bleeding, no cramping, nothing.  If she's had a u/s to confirm, I would absolutely recommend the D&C.  It's a horrible horrible experience, but the D&C allows you to move on instead of waiting it out.  In my case, my body just didn't recognize the loss.

Whatever she choses to do, my thoughts and prayers are with her, it's something no one should ever have to go through...

  • Definatly getting an u/s is the way to go. Best of luck to her!!

  • If her doctor is saying this based on the Doppler machiene alone, then she needs an ultrasound and a new doctor.  If shes had a sono, there is honestly no way to mistake no fetal heart motion especially at 12 weeks.  Even on a very early fetus, you should be able to definitively see a heart beat.  But by 12 weeks, if there is no heartbeat then that is not going to change...Im sorry for your friends loss :(

  • I find it really hard to believe that a dr. would recommend a D&C without first sending your friend for a u/s.  Hearing the hb on the doppler at that point can be pretty iffy.  If there was no hb on the u/s I don't think there's really any hope.

My thoughts are with your friend. Sad

    Agree

With my DD at 13 w they could not find the heart beat via doppler.  They immediately took me in  for an u/s and could see the heart beat right away.  If an u/s has confirmed there is no heart beat then at this stage waiting isn't going to change anything.

  • I am so sorry for your friend's loss. My last m/c was at 17 weeks. I went in for my normal appt. and there was no longer a heartbeat. I had an u/s right away to confirm and my d&e was sheduled for a few days later (I was given the option to induce labor as well)

    Miscarriages suck.

  • I forgot to add I would not do a d&c or medically induced m/c without an u/s to confirm at any point. Even my dr did a second u/s while I was in the operating room waiting for my d&e (I was already under). But at 12 weeks if there isn't a heartbeat on the u/s then there isn't a heratbeat. It isn't like at 6 weeks when a heartbeat can show up.

Now if she wants to miscarry on her own there is nothing wrong with that. i was given three options, d&e, induce the m/c with meds. or to wait for my body to do it on its own.

  • She had two ultrasounds and they could not find the heartbeat but the sac and embryo was there in her uterus

  • thanks girls, i never been through this I guess I was giving her the wrong advice because I didnt realize that the other girls just had a doppler test.  I thought that they could miss it on an ultrasound thay early.

Ditto. No one would be going in for my baby unless there was absolute proof that he/she had passed.

I unfortunatley had the same thing happen to me before my DD.  I then had a normal and healthy baby.  So sorry your friend is going through this.

Yeah, Im surprised they did 2 sonos unless the 1st was super early and they were questioning if they were actually seeing a fetal pole...but Im sorry to say that if she had the second at 12 weeks, then it is pretty final.
