sweet potatoes = no poop?

We started DD on sweet potatoes on Saturday. She is EBF and had maybe 2 or 3 bites of sweet potatoes once a day for 3 days. She hasn't pooped since so I stopped giving them to her. This is day 5 of no poop. She acts and seems fine. Anyone else experience this when starting solids?

Re: sweet potatoes = no poop?

  • I think its more the intro of solids than exactly which one. DD didn't poop on sweet potatos either but it was also her first solid. Until you introduce every food and they start getting a variety, its a pretty good chance you are going to see changes in her bowel habits. I give her prune juice on a fairly regular basis now since we are still trying out different foods. It helps some.

  • it could just be a coincidence. sweet potatoes usually make DD go nearly instantly.

  • It's normal for BF babies to go sometimes 10+ days without pooping.

If she's acting fine, I'd not worry too much about it.  And yes, I have had this experience.  My DD pooped several times a day before starting solids, now we have her on some solids (offered 3x/day, usually only eaten 1x/day), and she poops once every other day.

  • Yes and also constipation. The constipation really started about a month after he was born. Sometimes I need to give him 4 oz of water with 2 table spoons of light Karo syrup. But talk to the Pedi about it. See what they say?
  • DS doesn't have this problem, (He's EBF too) but his poop definitely changed to a more "fudgy" like consistency lol.  He struggles with it more since we started solids, but I'm assuming his body is just going to take a little while to adjust having more solid bms.  I wouldn't be concerned if she seems & acts fine.  My BFFs DD has gone 4 days no poop and she's EBF, so I think it's normal.  When DS seems backed up, I dilute a VERY small amt. of apple/prune juice and give it to him in his sippy. Generally, a poop will follow later in the day.
  • for my DD sweet potatoes just = looks exactly the same on the way out as it did goin' in.
  • Sweet potatoes seem to constipate DS a little bit- not bad, but he usually goes from 2 poops/day to 1 or even skips a day.  I usually try to give him pears or squash when he gets sweet potatoes because they both go right through him.  HTH

  • For my DS, yes, sweet potatoes OR squash = no poop.  My pedi said it's pretty common.  We backed off sweet potatoes, squash, apples and bananas for about two months and gradually introduced pears, peaches, apricots, peas and green beans.  All pedi-poop-approved foods.  Once DS got used to poop-friendly foods, we were able to cycle back in some of the other foods.
  • DD has been on solids since 4 1/2 months, and I have never seen a change in poop b/c of sweet potatoes.  The only time I see a change is when she eats green beans or peas - they come out looking like they went in - maybe TMI sorry.
  • I didn't notice this with sweet potatoes, but it could just be the introduction of solids- we use baby oatmeal and prunes if DD seems a bit constipated.
