pretzels?

My friend gives her 1 1/2 yr old pretzels as a snack, but this terrifies me and I am hesitant to give them to my DS b/c they are so hard and Im afraid he will choke. Just wondering, do you give pretzels as a snack?

Re: pretzels?

  • I usually break up unsalted pretzels into small pieces and let my DS munch on that that way, and he does just fine.

  • All the time starting at 16m. She handles them fine, no need to break them up. She started whole apples at that point as well.
  • I've given Mikey pieces when he's wanted some of mine. But not as a snack just for him.
  • YES! all the time. Believe it or not they get quite soggy and gross quickly!!

I have found that giving a big piece is better than the small b/c he doesn't cram the whole thing in his mouth he just knaws on it!

  • May I recommend hot pretzels? One of DS's fave food these days is a Super Pretzel heated up in the micro for 30 seconds. He especially likes the doughy part in the center and if you leave off the salt, it's actually pretty healthy.

  • DD LOVES pretzels. I usually don't give them to her as a snack, but if I'm eating them, of course I give her some. I eat the little twists, and they are just the right size for her little hands, and like PP said, they get soggy pretty quick after chewing on them for a while. I don't know why, but she can't get enough - she even dances when I give her one - it's become her 'pretzel dance'.

  • Yes, at this point my DD eats just about anything (other than the allergy avoiding foods).  I break things up small and pretzels do get mushy when wet.
